Founding Engineer

I’m working with a well-funded, early-stage AI startup transforming the employee benefits industry. They’re building an AI-native platform that is replacing the traditionally manual, relationship-driven brokerage model with software, automation, and intelligent workflows. The company was founded by an experienced team with deep expertise in the industry, alongside a CEO who previously founded and sold a well-known consumer technology company in a major acquisition. They’re now applying that experience to completely rethink how businesses manage employee benefits. They’re looking for a Founding Member of Technical Staff to join a small, senior engineering team and have significant ownership over the product and technical direction. What You’ll Be Doing Build full-stack web applications used by customers and internal operations teamsOwn features end-to-end, from architecture and system design through deployment, testing, monitoring, and iterationBuild AI agents and durable workflows that automate complex operational processesPut agents into production with human-in-the-loop approval, evaluations, observability, and reliability in mindIntegrate third-party tools and external systems while managing edge cases and failure modesDebug complex production issues and build long-term solutionsContribute to technical discussions, architecture decisions, and code reviewsWork closely with the founding team to shape the product and engineering roadmap What They’re Looking For 5+ years of full-stack engineering experienceStrong experience with TypeScript, Node.js, PostgreSQL, React, and modern backend/frontend frameworksExperience building products with complex business logic and workflowsStrong system design and database/schema design fundamentalsHigh standards for code quality and attention to detailSomeone who can comfortably write and reason about code without relying on AI, while using AI tools thoughtfully and spec-drivenExperience with Python/FastAPI, LangGraph, Temporal, ReAct loops, or RAG is a plus The Environment This is a high-agency, high-ownership engineering environment. You won't be handed perfectly defined tickets or specs. Engineers are expected to understand the problem, make technical decisions, ship quickly, and take ownership of the outcome. The team deploys frequently and is particularly interested in engineers who are excited about making agentic systems reliable in production, rather than simply building AI demos.
