A senior backend engineering opportunity focused on improving large-scale systems that support critical business operations. The role involves designing reliable services, optimizing existing platforms, and taking ownership of technical outcomes in a small experienced team.
Highlights
Fully remote senior engineering role with strong compensation, equity participation, ownership of impactful systems, and opportunities to influence architecture.
Description
Staff Backend Engineer - Python
$200k - $250k USD + Bonus + Equity
100% Remote (US)
Two-sided marketplace, bootstrapped, profitable, $100M+ revenue
Every job on this marketplace runs through six backend pillars: matching supply to demand, scheduling, payments, communications, compliance, and the operational workflows that keep thousands of daily in-person appointments running.
All of it lives in a Python and Django monolith that is stable today but has a long list of things worth making faster, safer and smarter.
That is the job.
Not a rewrite, not a maintenance seat: taking systems that already carry real revenue and making them measurably better.
You would join a small, senior, all-hands-on engineering team at a company with no outside funding and no runway anxiety.
Engineers here own outcomes, not tickets, and the distance between "I think this would help" and "it is live and we can see the number move" is very short.
What you will work on
Matching and scheduling: the logic that decides who gets which job and when, including experiments like smarter geo-based "system cancel" timing to cut unclaimed jobs and lift retention.Payments: keeping the money flows across both sides of the marketplace correct, reconciled and resilient as volume grows.Communications: the messaging that customers and cleaners rely on, and the sync between systems that feed it, catching gaps before they touch revenue or experience.Compliance and data hygiene: leading sensitive migrations that reduce risk, clean up legacy storage and minimise unnecessary PII.Operational workflows: the tooling that Care and Operations live in every day, where a fix shipped in the morning is in use by the afternoon.Own features end to end, from scoping through rollout and iteration, shipping quickly without letting quality slip.Design, run and analyse experiments that move real metrics, rolling changes out by region and refining on results.Work closely with Product, Design, QA and Analytics in a team where engineering and design move fast and quality has to keep pace.Take part in an on-call rotation with US time zone coverage as the team splits across EU and US.
What we are looking for
Strong backend engineering experience delivering customer-impacting product work: business logic, workflows, marketplace systems.Solid fundamentals in system design and API development, with an eye for edge cases, performance and operational health.Experience running safe changes in production: debugging, monitoring, on-call.Comfort with data-sensitive systems and migrations, and an instinct for reducing risk around customer and cleaner data.Ability to design and run experiments or iterative improvements, measure the impact and adjust.Clear, proactive communication in a distributed team, with enough flexibility to overlap across time zones when it matters.A product-minded approach.
Technical breadth across modern stacks helps, but strong fundamentals matter more than a perfect stack match.
If you have spent time at a Series A or B startup, done a stint in bigger tech, found yourself drifting away from the code, and miss being a craftsman, this is the one for you 😀
