Lead Software Architect About Maestronic Maestronic is a global transit technology company founded in the Netherlands in 1992 and headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, with an R&D office in Bali, Bandung, the Netherlands, and China We design, manufacture, and deploy technology for buses, trams, rail, and wayside infrastructure, including passenger information systems, vehicle communication gateways, CCTV and AI analytics, voice announcements, passenger counting and fleet management platforms. Our systems are deployed on more than 10,000 vehicles worldwide, with engineering and operations across Canada, Europe and Asia. The Opportunity We are looking for a Lead Software Architect to define and drive the next generation of Maestronic’s software platform. This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You will work across software, embedded systems, hardware, product, cybersecurity and customer-facing teams to turn real-world transit requirements into scalable, secure and maintainable software products. A key part of the role will be modernizing our existing .NET, PHP and Node.js software estate while defining a scalable platform architecture that supports new features, services, integrations and future product development. You will help define how our cloud services, APIs, telemetry, data platforms, vehicle systems, device management and security architecture evolve as Maestronic continues to scale. What You’ll Do Own and evolve Maestronic’s overall software architecture across applications, backend services, cloud, data, APIs and integrations.Define a pragmatic modernization roadmap for the existing .NET, PHP and Node.js platform.Establish clear system boundaries, interfaces, architecture patterns and technology standards.Translate customer requirements into reusable product capabilities rather than one-off solutions.Define architecture for APIs, telemetry, messaging, device identity, fleet management and vehicle-to-cloud integration.Lead application and cloud security architecture, including identity, authentication, authorization, secrets, secure communications and data protection.Improve architectural consistency, CI/CD, observability, monitoring and operational reliability.Lead architecture and technical design reviews.Mentor senior engineers and technical leads across our international engineering teams.Work closely with embedded and hardware teams to design robust solutions for distributed and intermittently connected vehicle fleets. What We’re Looking For 10+ years of experience in software engineering, architecture or technical leadership.Proven experience designing and evolving complex distributed software systems.Strong understanding of backend architecture, APIs, cloud platforms, data and distributed systems.Hands-on engineering background with the ability to engage deeply in technical design and implementation decisions.Experience modernizing legacy or existing software platforms.Strong understanding of application and cloud security.Ability to translate business and customer requirements into scalable product architecture.Strong communication and technical leadership skills across engineering, product and customer teams. Particularly Valuable Experience Experience in several of the following would be valuable: Node.js / TypeScript, .NET / C#, PHP, Azure/AWS/GCP, PostgreSQL, microservices, event-driven systems, Docker, Kubernetes, MQTT, IoT, edge computing, fleet management, OTA/device lifecycle management, cybersecurity and observability. Experience in transportation, telecommunications, industrial systems or other connected-device environments is also an advantage. Familiarity with ITxPT, APTA, GDPR, NIS2, EU Cyber Resilience Act, NIST, ISO 27001 or SOC 2 is beneficial but not required. We care more about strong architectural judgement, technical depth and the ability to solve complex real-world problems than about checking every technology on a list. How You’ll Work You will work closely with engineering teams in Vancouver and Asia, including regular collaboration with our Bali and Bandung organizations. Some flexibility in working hours is therefore required.
