About the Opportunity: The Staff Software Engineer, Compute (Temporal Cloud) role is responsible for designing and implementing core managed compute services that enable reliable, scalable, and safe execution of distributed workloads. This position drives the development of autoscaling systems, cloud integrations, and operational features critical to the platform’s performance and reliability. The role plays a key part in defining the architectural boundaries between open source and cloud components, delivering production-grade services, and leading technical direction to enhance the platform’s compute capabilities. This position has a high impact on the platform’s ability to support complex, multi-tenant, and cloud-native applications. 3. Responsibilities: Create managed compute primitives with clean APIs and extensibility across providers.Design and implement self-optimizing autoscaling systems for workload management.Define and maintain the architectural boundary between open source server and cloud compute capabilities.Architect, build, and operate performance-critical task execution services.Integrate cloud features including secure credential handling, IAM boundaries, and quota management.Ensure operability through SLOs, tracing, metrics, testing, and incident response.Deliver end-to-end solutions including API design, rollout strategies, and backward compatibility.Provide technical leadership through design documentation, code reviews, mentorship, and cross-team collaboration. 4. Requirements: Extensive experience building distributed systems or multi-tenant platform services.Strong understanding of concurrency, performance optimization, reliability, and failure modes.Proven track record of delivering platform primitives including APIs and control/data planes.Experience managing operational outcomes such as SLOs and incident response.Excellent written communication and decision-making skills.Go programming experience is a plus. Nice to have: Experience with cloud infrastructure platforms.Knowledge of IAM and security boundaries for cross-account execution.Experience building Kubernetes controllers, CRDs, or managing heterogeneous worker fleets. 5. Pay Range and Compensation Package: The estimated pay range for this role is $212,000 - $286,000 depending on experience and location.This role is eligible to participate in the organization’s equity plan.Compensation ranges reflect salary and commission across multiple markets and consider factors such as experience, expertise, and location. 6.
