You'll own problems from end to end: understanding what customers are stuck on, shaping the solution with product and design, building it, and shipping it. Ownership doesn't stop at the merge. You're the one watching how it gets used and deciding what the next version looks like. You'll also work with agents every day. Everyone here routes work through coding agents, and we're building the internal pipeline that makes that actually work: issues structured so an agent can pick them up, context files that give agents what they need, and guardrails that catch them when they get it wrong. Yes, we dogfood! We're doing to ourselves exactly what our customers are trying to do to their own engineering orgs, and a lot of our best product ideas come out of it. Our Stack We like boring technology because it's well tested, simple, and well supported. It's also what agents are best at. Decades of public Rails code in the training data means agents need less correcting here than on newer frameworks. Our current stack: Ruby on Rails (our main application's backend)Vue.js (our app's UI)Golang (for operational tools and our open source offerings)GraphQL (how the UI and the backend talk to each other; customers also use it as part of our platform)MySQL (gotta store those bits somewhere)Redis (some bits gotta be stored faster)Terraform (config as code, because any other way is painful)Kubernetes (we use AWS EKS)AWS / GCPDockerDataDog On the agent side we're less settled, on purpose. Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and more are in daily use, and we expect the specifics to change a few times a year. Whatever the tools, we treat agent workflows as part of the product, not a side experiment. What You'll Do Work with product, UX, and other engineers to understand customer problems in depth, then lead the work that solves them. We expect you to have opinions on what we build, not only how. Talk to customers. Join calls, read support threads, watch how real teams use OpsLevel, and let that influence what you build. Hold a high bar for your own work: well-tested code, and reviews other people can learn from. Use coding agents as a normal part of how you work, and improve the context, tooling, and guardrails so they help with our codebase instead of fighting it. Help build our internal software factory: the pipeline that routes work from Linear to agents and back to human review, plus the metrics that tell us whether it's working. Keep "you build it, you own it" alive by trusting your spidey sense and calling out tech debt or places our architecture could be better. Find, propose, and evangelize best practices in Ruby on Rails, GraphQL, and database design. Build private and public GraphQL APIs that power the OpsLevel front-end, our CLI, and our customers' own automation. Lead technical explorations and build prototypes to find the right solution before we commit to it. Ship on a predictable cadence, and tell the team early when something is off track. Mentor the people around you and invest in their growth. Take part in our on-call rotation, where you may need to troubleshoot across Ruby on Rails, Vue.js, GraphQL, and MySQL. Who You Are You approach problems with empathy and pragmatism, and you like working with other people. Done is better than perfect. You learn new things quickly and you're comfortable working on problems nobody on the team has solved yet. You already build with AI tools and have formed real opinions about where they help and where they waste your time. We care more about your judgment here than which tool you prefer. You have product instinct. You ask who the user is and what they're trying to accomplish before you start designing, and you're happy to argue for cutting scope. You've designed architectures with strong interface boundaries and separation of concerns, and you work from SOLID principles. You know Rails well. You probably have at least 5 years with Rails, or 7 with a similar web framework like Spring, Django, or Node.js. You've designed performant data models in MySQL and have strong opinions on how to structure data in an RDBMS. You know when and how to use indices and when to denormalize. You have battle scars from debugging and fixing slow queries. Nice to Haves You've built something with agents that went past autocomplete: an eval harness, a custom tool, an MCP server, or an internal workflow other people ended up using. Experience with AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform. Experience with Rails job systems like Sidekiq. Deep knowledge of MySQL. You've scaled a web application to thousands of users and millions of events. Knowledge of in-memory datastores like Redis. You understand what life is like at companies running hundreds of applications or microservices. This posting is for an existing vacancy.
