We're hiring a Backend Engineering Manager to lead our Backend Team, a small, senior team behind Yazio's API and all of the AI features in the app. This role is for an engineering manager who has led a team before and enjoys helping experienced engineers take full ownership of their work, including the conversations with Product. Let's shape the future of nutrition together and make Yazio the most successful nutrition app worldwide! This role is 100% remote and open to candidates based in Germany, Spain, Portugal or the UK. YOUR MISSION Our Backend Team works with the product squads across Yazio, including Monetization, Growth, Tracking Experience, Mobile Platform and Web, as well as Internal Tools and our CRM team. As its manager, you'll give the engineers the context and support they need to own their initiatives end to end, from planning through to conversations with each squad. In your first year, you'll: Take ownership of the team's rituals in your first couple of months (stand-ups, refinements, sprint planning, retros and a bi-weekly written sync) and keep improving how the team worksBuild close working relationships with squad leads and product managers, so backend work is part of each squad's plans from the start of the quarterOwn the team's part of our OKR process: build the quarterly roadmap with the engineers and keep progress visible to the teams that depend on itGrow the team through regular 1:1s, development goals and timely feedback, and step in early when accountability slipsHire for the team as it grows, together with our Talent Acquisition teamKeep an eye on production: when an issue or outage comes up, make sure it gets to the right person and is resolved YOUR PROFILE You'll thrive here if: You've led an engineering team with direct reports, and you've helped that team take on new responsibilities or change the way it worksBefore moving into management, you spent several years as a senior backend engineer, so you're comfortable discussing system design, infrastructure and technical trade-offs with a very experienced teamYou get results through your team: you coach engineers to make decisions and handle stakeholder conversations themselves, and you give them the room to do itYou're a clear, friendly communicator who stays calm under pressure, including during an outageYou build strong relationships with other leads and stakeholders, and you hold your ground when someone has a strong opinion while staying open to the best solutionYou have a strong product mindset and connect the team's work to what users and the business needYou notice when a topic has gone quiet and follow up before it stalls Bonus points for: Leading a team that supports several product squads at the same timeWorking on high-traffic consumer productsSetting up, or working in, a model where backend engineers are embedded in product squadsSteering the business with KPIs and running A/B tests to improve them OUR CORE TECH STACK Backend: PHP (REST APIs) and Go (async processing and high-concurrency features)Ways of working: Jira and Notion, with a Scrum-like processAI features: daily tips, meal summaries and food search by voice, text and imageAI in development: agentic coding as part of the team's everyday workflowScale: up to one million API requests per minute WHY US?
