We're looking for an experienced Senior Data Engineer to join our Data Engineering team, responsible for making data available and trusted across the whole of Nuffield Health. This is a role with real ownership: you'll own a functional area of our data platform, lead delivery initiatives and line manage engineers, setting the standards, patterns and direction that the wider team follows. Our Data Engineering team operates a distributed leadership model. Each Senior Data Engineer owns a defined functional area, such as ingestion and integration, incident management and observability, governance, security and cost management, or CI/CD and DevOps, and is accountable for the standards and resilience of that area so that nothing depends on a single person. Seniors lead delivery initiatives and line manage engineers, with the Lead Data Engineer retaining overall technical direction and the roadmap. You'll work with industry-leading technologies including Snowflake, dbt, Azure Data Factory, Talend, SQL Server, New Relic and Terraform. Could you play a key role in that? As our Senior Data Engineer, you'll: Own a defined functional area of the data platform, setting the standards, patterns and tooling the team follows within it and acting as the first point of contact for questions in that area.Avoid becoming a single point of dependency by documenting your work and helping other engineers develop the knowledge and skills needed to support your area, treating knowledge transfer as an ongoing obligation rather than a one-off handover.Lead delivery initiatives end to end, planning, resourcing and delivering against agreed constraints in collaboration with Product Owners, Delivery Managers, architects and third-party suppliers.Line manage engineers, including objectives, development plans and reviews, and line manage external or temporary resource aligned to your initiatives for their duration.Design, build and operate robust ingestion, integration and transformation solutions on Snowflake, dbt and Azure, in line with Nuffield Health's enterprise architecture and data engineering standards.Ensure solutions are operationally ready, observable and supportable, and contribute to incident and problem management as part of the team's service management approach.Coach mid-level engineers to take ownership of epics and smaller initiatives within their squad, growing the next generation of leaders in the team.Contribute to the team's technical roadmap, BAU planning and engineering maturity, including documentation, code quality, branching and testing standards.Escalate cross-cutting risks, dependencies and unassigned questions to the Lead Data Engineer, and communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders. To succeed as Senior Data Engineer, you'll bring: Substantial hands-on data engineering experience across integration, data modelling and data warehousing, with excellent SQL skills.Experience with ETL/ELT tools (e.g. Talend, Azure Data Factory, dbt) and database platforms (e.g. MS SQL Server, Snowflake, Azure SQL Database), including developing integration solutions using APIs, files and databases.Experience with performance tuning, data migration strategies (on premise and cloud) and relational database design, particularly in support of business intelligence.Experience setting and upholding engineering standards, and taking ownership of quality and outcomes for a technical area.Experience leading the delivery of a project or initiative, working with Product Owners, Delivery Managers, architects and third-party suppliers to manage scope, dependencies and risk.Line management or mentoring experience, or a clear appetite to develop it with structured support.Excellent communication skills, including documenting technical design proposals and translating complex technical concepts for technical and non-technical audiences. Desirable: Observability and incident management tooling, such as New Relic and ServiceNow.CI/CD, DevOps and infrastructure as code, such as Terraform and Azure DevOps.Data governance and security: data masking, GDPR, access auditing, PII handling, role-based access and cloud cost management.Experience in healthcare or another regulated environment.
