Energy Analytics Engineer

We are supporting an international energy business with the appointment of an Energy Analytics Engineer / Data & Automation Analyst within their Commercial Finance function in London. This is an opportunity for a technically strong data, analytics or software professional to join a growing energy business and work at the intersection of data, technology and commercial decision-making. The role will work closely with Trading, Quantitative Analytics, Technology, Data Architecture and Commercial Finance, developing analytical tools, automated data flows and applications that improve how the business manages and understands its commercial activity. The business operates across GB power, gas and carbon markets, with exposure to CCGT, BESS, Energy Management Services and a range of increasingly sophisticated trading arrangements. There is significant scope to shape the role and its technology landscape. You’ll be working on a combination of automation, data engineering, analytical applications, reporting and commercial tools, with the opportunity to contribute to projects well beyond a single function. The Role The Energy Analytics Engineer will help develop and enhance the analytical capability supporting the wider commercial organisation. You’ll be involved in areas such as: Building Python-based applications and automated data pipelinesWorking with large, complex and time-series datasetsDeveloping dashboards, analytical tools and reporting applicationsAutomating calculations, reconciliations and commercial processesBuilding data integrations between internal systems, external market data and the Aligne ETRMDeveloping automated controls and analytical solutions that improve data quality and commercial visibilityIdentifying opportunities to replace manual or spreadsheet-based processes with scalable technologyWorking closely with Trading and Quantitative Analytics on data-driven projectsSupporting the development of commercial analytics across areas such as settlements, P&L, credit and collateralWorking with Technology and Data Architecture to develop robust, production-quality solutionsContributing to the continual development of the company's wider data and analytics capability The role offers exposure to a broad range of commercial and technical challenges, with the opportunity to develop a strong understanding of energy markets, trading activity and the data infrastructure that supports them. What they’re looking for This could suit someone coming from a variety of technical or analytical backgrounds. Relevant experience could include data engineering, data science, software engineering, quantitative analytics, energy analytics, commercial analytics or digital transformation. Energy experience is useful but not essential. The business is particularly interested in people who are technically capable, commercially curious and enjoy solving complex problems through data and automation. You’ll ideally bring: 2+ years’ experience in data, automation, software development, analytics or a similar environmentStrong Python skillsExperience with SQL, databases and large datasetsExperience building analytical applications, automated processes or dashboardsExperience working with APIs and data integrationsFamiliarity with Git, testing and modern software development practicesStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsThe ability to translate complex data into practical business solutionsStrong communication skills and the ability to work across technical and commercial teams
