Our challenge We are seeking an experienced Lead Java Developer with strong expertise in Java 17+, Spring Boot, microservices architecture, application architecture and design, and Apache Kafka. The successful candidate will lead the design and development of scalable, secure, and high-performance enterprise applications within the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) domain. Additional Information* The base salary for this position will vary based on geography and other factors. In accordance with law, the base salary for this role if filled within Pittsburgh, PA is $120k - $130k/year & benefits (see below). The Role Responsibilities: Lead the design, development, and implementation of enterprise-grade applications using Java 17 or higher and Spring Boot.Define and implement scalable, resilient, and secure microservices architectures.Own application architecture, technical design, component design, and integration patterns.Design and develop event-driven solutions using Apache Kafka.Lead technical discussions, code reviews, design reviews, and architectural decision-making.Develop RESTful APIs and integrate with internal and external systems.Ensure applications meet enterprise standards for security, scalability, availability, performance, and maintainability.Mentor and guide developers, promote engineering best practices, and support technical skill development.Collaborate with product managers, business analysts, architects, DevOps teams, QA engineers, and compliance stakeholders.Translate business and regulatory requirements into robust technical solutions.Identify and resolve complex technical issues across application, integration, and production environments.Support CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and cloud-native deployment practices.Contribute to technology roadmaps, modernization initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts.Ensure compliance with organizational security policies and applicable AML/KYC regulations. Requirements: Strong hands-on experience with Java 17+, including modern language features and JVM concepts.Extensive experience with Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Security, Spring Data, and Spring Cloud.Strong knowledge of microservices architecture, distributed systems, and cloud-native application design.Proven expertise in Apache Kafka, including event-driven architecture and high-volume message processing.Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and service-to-service integrations.Experience with relational and NoSQL databases such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, or Cassandra.Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or Azure DevOps.Experience with Docker and container orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes.Knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.Proven experience working on AML, KYC, Financial Crime, Compliance, or Regulatory Technology projects. Preferred Skills: Experience with event-driven and reactive systems.Knowledge of CQRS, event sourcing, or streaming architectures.Experience with Kubernetes-based production environments.Familiarity with cloud security and enterprise integration patterns.Experience with architecture documentation tools such as Confluence, Jira, Draw.io, or ArchiMate.Relevant certifications in Java, cloud technologies, Kafka, Kubernetes, or enterprise architecture.
