Description
Project: Bridging Data and Action: AI-Powered Mapping of Multidimensional Vulnerability for Climate-Resilient Communities (Google – Vulnerability project)
Purpose and Objectives:
Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) is an autonomous international organization established for scientific, educational, developmental, and humanitarian purposes with a vision of safer communities and sustainable development through disaster risk reduction and climate resilience in Asia and the Pacific.
ADPC develops and implements cross-sectoral projects/programs on the strategic themes of risk governance, urban resilience, climate resilience, health risk management, preparedness for response, and resilient recovery.
Our strategic themes are complemented and underpinned by the cross-cutting themes of gender and diversity, regional and transboundary cooperation, and poverty and livelihoods.
Through its work, ADPC supports the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the New Urban Agenda, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the agenda defined at the World Humanitarian Summit in 2016, and other relevant international frameworks.
For details, please refer to ADPC website at http://www.adpc.net/.
The Risk Analytics and Climate Services Department of ADPC is a multi-disciplinary team of experts committed to providing innovative, science-based solutions to address climate risks and enhance resilience to climate change.
Addressing climate change adaptation is the primary goal of the department with a focus on climate data integration, early warning systems, impact-based forecasting leading to anticipatory action into agricultural planning and water resource management for water and food security.
The department applies advanced geoinformatics and climate analytics to address water and food security by assessing water availability, water use efficiency, groundwater management, monitoring drought risks, and optimizing agricultural productivity, ensuring sustainable resource use and food systems in vulnerable regions.
The department promotes Nature-Based Solutions by leveraging ecosystem services such as wetland restoration, agroforestry, and green-gray infrastructure to reduce disaster risks and build climate resilience.
To enhance the climate and disaster resilience of urban settings and physical infrastructure, particularly critical infrastructure, the department promotes the integration of climate and disaster risk information into the urban plans and engineering design through comprehensive hazard, vulnerability, risk and criticality assessments that aims to develop risk-informed urban plans and also adaptive infrastructure capable of withstanding extreme climate events such as floods, heatwaves, and sea-level rise as well as geological hazards (e.g.
earthquakes, landslides etc.).
With a commitment to science-based approach, the department envisions to empowering stakeholders to reduce risks, adapt to climate change, and build more resilient communities and ecosystems.
ADPC is partnering with Spatial Informatics Group – Natural Assets Laboratory (SIG-NAL) to co-develop a multidimensional vulnerability mapping platform that integrates real-time socio-economic and hazard data into an interactive AI-powered dashboard.
The scope includes web development, AI/data science support, user outreach, and stakeholder capacity-building in the selected pilot countries.
ADPC is seeking a motivated volunteer who is web developer, to support the enhancement and development of the geospatial portal.
The volunteer will work closely with the technical team to improve the portal’s user interface, functionality, data visualization, and integration of geospatial datasets and services.
This opportunity is ideal for individuals with an interest in web development, geospatial technologies, and interactive mapping who would like to gain practical experience while contributing to the development of a real-world geospatial platform supporting disaster risk management and climate resilience in Southeast Asia.
Responsibilities and Tasks:
Review and document the RLCMS Geospatial portal structure, features, and technical limitations.Redesign and modernize web pages using responsive and user-friendly interface principles.Develop frontend components using React, Next.js, and TypeScript.Improve interactive land-cover and forest-monitoring maps using MapLibre GLIntegrate geospatial datasets, map layers, APIs, and downloadable raster data.Implement map tools such as layer selection, legends, search, filtering, zoom controls, and data download options.Improve website navigation across dashboards, publications, training materials, library resources, and monitoring services.Support content management improvements for blogs, reports, announcements, and documentation.Optimize website performance, mobile responsiveness, SEO, and accessibility.Assist with backend API development and data services using Python, FastAPI, or Node.js.Work with geospatial technologies such as PostGIS, GeoServer, Cloud Optimized GeoTIFFs, and cloud storage.Write reusable, maintainable, and well-documented code.Create unit tests and frontend end-to-end tests using tools such as Jest, Vitest, or Playwright.Use Git and GitHub for version control and collaborative development.Assist in setting up CI/CD workflows and deployment processes using platforms such as Docker, GitHub Actions, and Vercel or cloud services.Prepare technical documentation, user guides, and system handover materials.Participate in team meetings, code reviews, testing, and progress presentations.
Deliverables:
Enhance ADPC’s geoportal to support land cover mapping and risk and vulnerability assessment.
Working Principles:
The volunteer will work under the supervision and report to the Geospatial Web Developer
Qualifications:
Undergraduate or graduate student, recent graduate, or early-career professional in Computer Science, Information Technology, Web Development, GIS/Geoinformatics, or a related field.Basic to intermediate skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.Familiarity with web mapping libraries such as Leaflet, Mapbox, or OpenLayers.Basic understanding of GIS, geospatial data, and APIs.Experience with Git/GitHub and responsive web design is an advantage.Good problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.Interest in geospatial technology, disaster risk management, and climate resilience is desirable.
Duty Station: Can be home based or on site at ADPC’s office in Bangkok
Duration:
This volunteer period will be full time for around 3 months, from mid-October to mid-January, 2026.
Depending on work requirement may be extended.
How to Apply:
Interested Candidates can submit the completed ADPC application form, (downloadable from www.adpc.net), resume, copy of degrees/certificate(s) together with a cover letter, to: adpcjobs@adpc.net or through google form by midnight Bangkok time on 2 October 2026.
