Engineer - Electrical Distribution Systems

Expected Salary Range: $104097 - $146959 Annually Target Variable Performance Pay: 8% The salary range shown above reflects the expected compensation for this position. The final salary offered will be determined based on a holistic assessment of the candidate’s experience, education, training, and alignment with the role’s requirements. For positions covered by a collective agreement, placement within the range will follow the applicable step or classification. As an Engineer, you provide a wide range of engineering support services that will ensure technical soundness, reliability, safety and cost effectiveness of the utility and its Electrical Distribution Power System. The Engineer performs technical studies and assessments; participates in short- and long-range strategic planning; drives initiatives and innovative projects; prepares engineering, technical or business reports and studies; and demonstrates effective project management and process efficiencies. This posting is to fill one (1) position, which is an existing vacancy. Toronto Hydro reserves the right, in alignment with the applicable collective agreement, to finalize the number of positions filled. Key Responsibilities Perform system studies to ensure the safe, reliable, efficient and economical operation of our distribution system (i.e., Protection and Coordination studies, Short Circuit studies, Arc Flash studies, Load Flow analysis, etc.)Enhance and manage engineering tools and distribution system modelling softwareReview and perform quality checks on study results and reports as produced by other team membersLead and support key Intelligent Grid Initiatives by leading technical discussions, scoping projects, and managing overall project progressLiaise with customers, planners, technical consultants, internal stakeholders and external vendors to support projectsStay abreast of trends and technical innovations that translate into business development opportunitiesJustify, defend and manage capital programsPropose and evaluate grid solutions to enhance grid reliability and efficiencyPrepare engineering, technical or business reports and studies; performs analysis, testing and evaluationsProvide timely technical support and consultation through effective project management and the development of process efficienciesPursue a high level of internal and external client satisfaction, and foster a customer-centric focusReviews, develops and/or presents business proposals, plans, designs, processes, operational procedures and practicesManage relationships with inter-organizational business units and external customers as requiredActive participation in industry working groups and committees to keep apprised of industry best practices and influence policy development and decision makingSupport the continued development and improvement of network analysis systems and toolsProvide technical support or leadership on strategic technical projects Requirements Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario Bachelor’s degree in engineeringFour (4) + years of Engineering experience, preferably in the utilities industryExcellent knowledge and understanding of general utility business, knowledge of electrical distribution system design and operationExcellent knowledge and experience with use of power distribution network analysis software, such as CYMEProficiency in programming and data management tools (e.g., Python, SQL, VBA, Alteryx, Tableau) with demonstrated application in utility engineeringDemonstrated knowledge and experience in the design and specification of protection, coordination and control systems used in power distribution and electrical substationsKnowledge and experience with distribution systems analyses such as short circuit, protection & coordination, load flow and arc flash, etc.Knowledge of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs)Knowledge of reliability projection modellingValid Class “G” Drivers License recommendedExperience with grid automation and SCADA/DMS systemsFluent in the application of information technology, such as general office software, and engineering recordsExcellent understanding of Toronto Hydro’s Conditions of Service and StandardsExcellent relationship management, customer service excellence and key account management skillsSuperior interpersonal, verbal/written communications skillsEffective skills in project management operations, budgeting, business process and productivity improvementsAptitude and experience in adapting to, managing and facilitating change demonstrated through self-motivation and stakeholder managementAbility to predict and understand technological trends and their effect on business or strategic work plansSelf-motivated, operates with a high degree of independence and can visualize possibilities and opportunitiesDemonstrated versatile leadership; encourages organizational teamwork, exemplifies collaboration and educated risk taking to develop innovative solutions and support the corporate goalsExcellent analytical, organization and planning skillsProven effective problem-solving and analytical ability TOTAL REWARDS To support the overall well-being and success of our employees, Toronto Hydro provides a comprehensive total rewards package which includes: 100% employer paid Health & Dental benefits24/7 access to Employee & Family Assistance Program and Virtual HealthcareCompany-paid life insurance and long term disabilitySpending account to support fitness goals (e.g. gym memberships)Competitive paid time off (including vacation and parental leave)Defined Benefits Pension Plan through OMERSCareer development and tuition reimbursementExciting employee engagement and appreciation events throughout the year This position is based in a hybrid environment allowing for remote work two days per week, based on business needs. Employees will be required to come onsite Tuesday to Thursday. You are expected to live in Ontario and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.
