Typical Activities This is a technical leadership role where approximately 70% of your time is spent hands-on developing software, with the remaining 30% focused on line management and developing a high-performing engineering team. Working closely with the Head of Software, you'll remain active software engineers while providing leadership, coaching and technical direction across the engineering function. This role is ideal for experienced software engineers who enjoy mentoring others but still want to spend the majority of their time designing, developing and reviewing high-quality software. Software Engineering (Approximately 70%) Design, develop and maintain production-quality software as an active member of engineering teamsWrite, review and optimise high-quality code, primarily in real-time CProduce and review software architecture, design documentation and technical proposalsParticipate in code reviews, design reviews and engineering governance activitiesSupport engineers through technical mentoring, pairing and collaborative problem solvingOwn the quality, maintainability and delivery of software solutionsApply modern software engineering practices including CI/CD, automated testing and secure developmentContribute to planning, estimation and technical decision making across multiple projectsDrive consistency in engineering standards, tooling and development practices Line Management (Approximately 30%) Line manage a team of approximately eight software engineersConduct regular one-to-one meetings, objective setting and performance reviewsSupport career development through coaching, mentoring and development planningIdentify training needs and help grow capability across the engineering functionSupport recruitment, onboarding and succession planningWork alongside the Head of Software to develop technical capability aligned to future business needsEncourage knowledge sharing and collaboration across engineering teamsContribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, standards and best practice What we're looking for Strong background in software engineering with the ability and desire to remain hands-onSignificant commercial experience developing software in C within embedded or low-level systemsExperience working throughout the full software development lifecycle in a product development environmentStrong understanding of modern software engineering practices including CI/CD, code review and automated testingAbility to interpret high-level requirements and translate them into practical technical solutionsStrong communication skills with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholdersExperience producing and reviewing high-quality technical documentationExperience supporting career progression and mentoring engineersAbility to build, motivate and develop high-performing engineering teams Desirable Experience with Go or RustExperience developing modern web applicationsPython and Bash scriptingUI development using Qt or wxPythonExperience with automated testing frameworks such as Robot Framework or OpenHTFKnowledge of fuzzing and software analysis tools (AFL, PRQA, Lint or equivalent)Experience debugging embedded systems using oscilloscopes, bench power supplies and other laboratory equipmentExperience driving engineering process improvements across multiple teams Why Work at PentenAmio?
