About The Role As a Junior Full Stack Engineer , you will build your foundation as a software engineer while contributing directly to PayMongo’s technology platform—the systems that process payments, detect fraud, enable merchant settlements, and support thousands of businesses across the Philippines. You will work across both frontend and backend development , taking ownership of well-scoped features, bug fixes, and technical improvements with guidance and mentorship from more experienced engineers. As you become more familiar with PayMongo’s codebase, technology stack, and engineering practices, you will progressively take on more complex work and greater ownership of features. This role is designed for new graduates and early-career engineers with 0–3 years of experience who have strong software engineering fundamentals and are excited to learn. Prior fintech experience is not required—you will gain exposure to how engineering works within a BSP-regulated fintech where product velocity must be balanced with reliability, security, risk, and compliance. What You Will Do Build Features Across the Stack You will contribute directly to PayMongo’s products and platform by developing well-defined frontend and backend features. You Will: Work on scoped engineering tickets across frontend and backend systems . Build frontend components and functionality using React and JavaScript . Develop backend functionality using Ruby on Rails . Work with PostgreSQL and Active Record to interact with application data. Follow established engineering patterns and coding standards within the existing codebase. Seek technical guidance and code review from senior engineers as you build familiarity with PayMongo’s systems. Progressively take ownership of more complex features as your technical proficiency grows. Write Reliable, Well-Tested Code You will learn to build software that is not only functional but maintainable and reliable. You Will: Write unit and integration tests for the features and bug fixes you develop. Follow the team’s established testing conventions and quality standards. Run relevant tests locally and through continuous integration before requesting review. Incorporate feedback from code reviews to continuously improve your work. Build familiarity with testing tools and frameworks such as RSpec, Cucumber, Capybara, and Jest . Develop the discipline required to deliver code that meets specifications with minimal rework. Debug and Troubleshoot Issues You will develop your ability to investigate technical problems and understand how production systems behave. You Will: Investigate lower-complexity bugs and production issues with guidance from more experienced engineers. Use logs, monitoring, and observability tools to narrow down potential root causes. Learn how different parts of PayMongo’s systems interact when diagnosing issues. Resolve issues within your scope and clearly document what you have found. Recognize when a problem requires broader system knowledge and escalate it with useful technical context. Build familiarity with tools and environments such as Datadog, CloudWatch, and AWS . Learn Through Code Reviews and Engineering Collaboration You will work within a collaborative engineering environment where feedback, mentorship, and knowledge-sharing are part of everyday development. You Will: Participate actively in pull request and code reviews . Review teammates’ work with a learning mindset and ask questions to understand technical and design decisions. Receive and apply constructive feedback from more experienced engineers. Participate in standups, sprint planning, retrospectives, and other engineering rituals. Pair with senior engineers as you learn the codebase and take on unfamiliar problems. Work with Product Managers and Designers to understand the context and requirements behind the features you build. Grow Your Engineering Independence This role is designed to develop you into an increasingly independent software engineer. You Will: Complete structured onboarding covering PayMongo’s codebase, tools, products, and engineering practices. Learn established development, testing, deployment, and security standards. Start with clearly scoped technical work and progressively take on more complex tickets. Develop a deeper understanding of the systems supporting payments, fraud, settlements, merchant onboarding, and the PayMongo dashboard . Learn how regulatory, security, and risk considerations influence engineering decisions within a fintech environment. Use mentorship and feedback to continuously improve your technical judgment, code quality, and ability to solve problems independently. We are looking for strong fundamentals and the ability to learn unfamiliar technologies, apply feedback, and become increasingly productive within an existing codebase. What We're Looking For We are looking for a new graduate or early-career software engineer who has a solid foundation in programming and web development and, importantly, demonstrates the curiosity and learning agility needed to grow quickly in a production engineering environment. You Should Bring: 0–3 years of software engineering experience , including relevant internship, bootcamp, academic, or early professional experience. Basic understanding of Ruby on Rails or another backend framework , with the ability to learn Rails on the job. Basic to intermediate proficiency in JavaScript, React, HTML, and CSS , with the ability to build simple UI components and features. Basic understanding of RESTful APIs and how applications consume them. Basic knowledge of SQL and relational databases ; PostgreSQL experience is helpful but not required. Familiarity with Git/GitHub , including branches, pull requests, and basic conflict resolution. An understanding of software testing fundamentals and a willingness to learn PayMongo’s testing frameworks. Strong problem-solving fundamentals and the ability to break down small to moderately complex technical problems with guidance. Clear communication skills and the confidence to ask questions or seek help when blocked. A collaborative mindset and openness to pairing, mentorship, code review, and constructive feedback . A strong desire to learn and the ability to apply coaching quickly. Nice to Have Experience or exposure in the following would be helpful, but is not required : Automated unit or integration testing. AWS or another cloud platform . CI/CD concepts and tooling. Agile or Scrum development environments. Fintech, payments, e-commerce, banking, or financial technology. Academic, internship, bootcamp, or personal projects that demonstrate full-stack development capability. Exposure to production applications or an existing multi-developer codebase. Prior fintech experience is not required . What matters more is your willingness to learn how payment processing, settlements, risk, security, and regulatory requirements influence the way financial technology is built. What Success Looks Like Success in this role is about growth in capability and independence , not arriving on day one already knowing everything. You Will Be Successful When You: Complete key onboarding and technical learning milestones within your first 90 days , including your first merged pull request and independently owned ticket. Consistently complete well-scoped tickets according to requirements with reasonable turnaround and minimal rework. Write code and automated tests that meet the team’s quality standards. Incorporate code-review feedback and demonstrate improvement across successive development cycles. Progressively handle more complex tickets while requiring less guidance over time. Participate actively and constructively in code reviews, standups, planning, and engineering discussions. Develop a stronger understanding of PayMongo’s systems, products, and engineering practices. Grow from completing guided technical tasks toward increasingly independent ownership of features. Team & Reporting You will report to an Engineering Manager and join a cross-functional engineering team responsible for platform services such as payments, fraud, settlements, merchant onboarding, and the PayMongo dashboard . This is an individual contributor role with no direct reports . During onboarding, you will typically work closely with a senior engineer as a mentor or buddy , giving you someone to learn from as you become familiar with PayMongo’s codebase and engineering practices. You will also collaborate with mid-level and senior engineers through pairing and code reviews, and with Product Managers and Designers to understand the product context behind your work. The role is designed to give you room to grow. As your technical skills and judgment develop, you will take on increasingly complex work and can continue building your career along PayMongo’s Engineering individual-contributor track , progressing toward broader and more independent technical ownership.
