Staff Software Engineer - Video Platform

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer - Video Platform based in Australia. This role offers the opportunity to shape the infrastructure behind large-scale audio and video experiences used by millions of people globally. You will design and build high-performance C++ services, frameworks, and distributed systems powering multimedia ingestion, processing, storage, and delivery. Working within a dedicated Audio & Video Platform team, you will tackle complex challenges across scalability, reliability, performance, and cost efficiency. You will collaborate closely with engineering, product, and design teams to enable exceptional video editing and playback experiences. The role combines deep technical ownership with opportunities to influence platform architecture and engineering practices. You will also help evolve the infrastructure supporting a rapidly growing multimedia ecosystem. Accountabilities Develop and maintain high-performance C++ services, frameworks, and tools supporting audio and video processing at scale.Design and implement distributed systems for multimedia ingestion, processing, storage, transcoding, and global delivery.Build new platform capabilities that enable high-quality video editing and playback experiences.Optimize multimedia processing pipelines for performance, reliability, scalability, video quality, and cost efficiency.Troubleshoot complex production, performance, and reliability issues and contribute to long-term infrastructure improvements.Drive engineering excellence through testing, code reviews, operational best practices, and continuous improvement.Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and designers to translate product needs into scalable technical solutions.Contribute to the evolution of platform architecture and infrastructure supporting a large-scale multimedia ecosystem. Requirements Strong commercial experience building highly scalable, secure, and performant backend systems using C++.Deep understanding of computer science and software engineering fundamentals, including concurrency, multithreading, memory management, data structures, architecture, and design patterns.Proven experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems and scalable backend architectures.Hands-on experience working with cloud platforms and services in production environments.Strong debugging and diagnostic skills, with the ability to resolve complex performance, reliability, and production issues.Extensive experience with modern video codecs such as H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, VP9, or AV1.Deep experience with multimedia frameworks and libraries such as FFmpeg and/or GStreamer, including source-level debugging, architecture analysis, performance profiling, and custom patch development.Experience building large-scale video ingestion, storage, transcoding, processing, and delivery systems.Strong understanding of multimedia containers and formats such as MP4 and WebM.Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, product, and design functions.Genuine interest in audio and video technologies and enthusiasm for solving multimedia processing challenges at massive scale.Contributions to FFmpeg, GStreamer, or other open-source multimedia projects are valued.Experience with adaptive bitrate streaming technologies such as DASH, HLS, or CMAF is a plus.Experience optimizing encoding pipelines for video quality, storage efficiency, and delivery performance is a plus.Experience working with Java-based services in large-scale distributed environments is an advantage.
