Backend Software Engineer

You'll join a fast-moving engineering team with real ownership, shipping to production daily and using AI as part of how we work. We’re looking for a Backend Software Engineer with strong C#/.NET and SQL Server experience to help build, improve and support the systems behind some of Kogan.com’s most critical business operations. You’ll work across backend applications, databases, APIs and integrations, solving complex problems in a live environment and building long-term solutions that improve reliability, performance and scalability. What You’ll Do: Build and enhance backend applications and services using C# and Entity Framework.Design, optimise and troubleshoot SQL Server queries, stored procedures, views, indexes and data models.Build and maintain APIs and integrations across critical business systems.Investigate complex production issues across applications, databases and integrations and deliver permanent fixes.Improve system performance, reliability and scalability across high-volume, business-critical platforms.Build automation that reduces manual work and improves operational efficiency.Improve monitoring, tooling and engineering processes across the environment.Work closely with Engineering, Finance and Operations to turn business requirements into scalable technical solutions.Maintain high levels of data integrity across financial, inventory and operational systems.Take ownership of solutions from investigation and design through to implementation and production support.Contribute to technical improvements and longer-term architecture decisions. What You Bring: Strong commercial experience with C#/.NET and Entity Framework.Strong SQL Server capability, including complex queries, stored procedures, indexing and performance optimisation.Experience building or supporting backend systems, APIs and integrations.Strong troubleshooting skills across applications, databases and distributed systems.Experience working with business-critical or data-heavy production environments.Understanding of REST APIs, service layers and system integrations.Ability to identify root causes and build sustainable solutions rather than rely on short-term fixes.Strong ownership, prioritisation and problem-solving skills.Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.A continuous improvement mindset with an interest in automation, scalability and system reliability.
