Senior Rust Engineer

About the Role An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Rust Engineer to join a growing technology organisation building next-generation data infrastructure platforms. This role will focus on designing, developing and optimising high-performance backend systems that can process large-scale datasets with speed, reliability and scalability. Working within a highly skilled engineering team, you'll leverage your expertise in Rust, asynchronous programming and distributed systems to solve complex technical challenges, influence architectural decisions and contribute to the ongoing evolution of a mission-critical platform. Key Responsibilities Systems & Software EngineeringDesign, develop and maintain high-performance backend systems using Rust and Java.Build scalable, reliable asynchronous services using modern concurrency patterns.Develop APIs, internal tooling, reusable libraries and engineering frameworks.Contribute to system architecture and technical decision-making.Deliver solutions for large-scale data processing workloads.Performance & ReliabilityOptimise throughput, latency, memory utilisation and I/O performance.Analyse and improve memory ownership, buffer management and serialization efficiency.Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks across distributed systems.Ensure production readiness through testing, debugging, monitoring and code reviews.Drive improvements in scalability, reliability and maintainability.Collaboration & DeliveryPartner with engineering, product and platform teams to deliver business outcomes.Take ownership of technically complex and ambiguous challenges.Contribute to engineering best practices, technical documentation and knowledge sharing.Work effectively with globally distributed teams and stakeholders. Essential Requirements5+ years of software engineering experience, including strong Java development expertise.2+ years of hands-on commercial Rust development experience within production environments.Strong experience with asynchronous Rust programming, ideally using Tokio.Deep understanding of Rust memory ownership, borrowing, lifetimes, allocations and buffer management.Proven experience building and delivering distributed systems or high-performance backend applications.Strong knowledge of concurrency, backpressure handling, cancellation, streams and async execution models.Experience designing APIs, internal libraries or reusable engineering frameworks.Excellent debugging, troubleshooting and performance optimisation skills.Ability to independently solve complex technical problems and drive solutions through to delivery.Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.What's on Offer?Permanent opportunity with a growing technology business.Work on challenging, large-scale engineering problems using Rust.Influence architecture and technical direction.Collaborative, engineering-led environment.Chatswood location with flexible working arrangements.
