Senior Java Software Engineer

Tangent International is supporting an established technology organisation in Munich with the appointment of a Senior Software Engineer specialising in Java backend development. We are looking for an experienced, hands-on Java engineer who enjoys building and improving scalable backend applications and microservices. This position would suit someone operating at or approaching Senior level who has strong experience across the Java ecosystem and understands the underlying principles of Java, rather than working solely at framework level. The role You will join an experienced engineering team responsible for designing, developing and maintaining business-critical backend applications and services. Your responsibilities will include: Designing, developing and maintaining backend applications using Java and Spring BootBuilding and developing microservices and REST APIsTaking ownership of services throughout the software development lifecycleContributing to system design, architecture and technical decisionsModernising and improving existing applications and servicesTroubleshooting and resolving technical issues within production environmentsImproving application performance, scalability, reliability and maintainabilityWorking with relational databases and SQLCollaborating with Product, QA, DevOps and other Software EngineersParticipating in code reviews and contributing to engineering best practicesSupporting and mentoring less experienced engineers where appropriate What we're looking for Strong commercial experience developing backend applications with JavaGood knowledge of core Java and the wider Java ecosystemCommercial experience with Spring / Spring BootExperience designing and developing microservicesStrong experience building and consuming RESTful APIsExperience with SQL and relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL or OracleUnderstanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, collections and common software design principlesExperience working with modern software development and CI/CD practicesComfortable taking ownership of technical problems and working independently when required Experience with technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, Kafka, Maven, Gradle and cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or GCP would be beneficial. Exposure to areas such as JVM performance, multithreading/concurrency, event-driven architectures and distributed systems would also be advantageous, but is not essential.
