Senior Software Engineer – Legal Applications (AI-First) The Client Our client is a large, global software group that acquires, operates and grows specialist software businesses across a wide range of industries and markets. The organisation operates internationally through a highly decentralised model, with individual businesses retaining significant autonomy while benefiting from the financial strength, resources and long-term outlook of the wider group. Unlike a traditional software company built around a small number of products, the group is made up of many specialist software businesses serving mission-critical vertical markets around the world. This creates a large and varied internal environment spanning different businesses, jurisdictions and technology platforms. This position sits within the group’s internal legal technology function and will focus on an application used by lawyers across the organisation. The business is looking at how software and AI can improve the way its legal teams work at scale. The Role We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer who can take broad ownership of this application and work directly with the lawyers who use it. This isn’t purely a development role where you’ll be handed tickets to complete. You’ll speak directly with stakeholders, understand their workflows and problems, determine where technology can help, and turn those requirements into dependable software. You’ll be involved across the full product lifecycle - discovery, roadmap planning, architecture, development, testing, release, production support and continuous improvement. What You’ll Do Meet directly with lawyers and other stakeholders to understand workflows, pain points and priorities.Translate real-world problems into clear requirements, product decisions and a practical roadmap.Design, build, test, release and maintain features across the frontend, backend, APIs, integrations and infrastructure.Use AI-first development approaches throughout the engineering lifecycle, including discovery, coding, testing, documentation and support.Explore where AI can improve legal workflows while recognising where human review, safeguards and clear limitations are required.Take ownership of the application in production, investigating issues, diagnosing root causes and making improvements that reduce recurring problems.Build and maintain APIs, integrations and data flows connecting the application with internal systems.Work alongside legal, security, technology and business stakeholders on privacy, confidentiality, access control and reliability.Take ownership of both technical and product decisions, balancing immediate requirements with the long-term health of the application. What We’re Looking For You’ll have 5+ years of professional software engineering experience using Python, TypeScript, Java, .NET or comparable technologies. You should also bring: Experience building and supporting production applications across frontend, backend, APIs and infrastructure.Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to quickly understand unfamiliar systems and business workflows.Experience working directly with users and stakeholders to turn ambiguous requirements into practical software.Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools, alongside the engineering judgment to validate generated code, tests and recommendations.A product mindset — comfortable moving from user feedback and loosely defined problems to clear priorities and shipped improvements.Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders.A thoughtful approach to security, privacy and reliability when dealing with sensitive information.The ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and take long-term ownership of an application.
