Senior Software Engineer (Payments) — Programa 📍 Melbourne (Cremorne) · Hybrid, 2 days/week in-office 💰 $170,000 – $180,000 + Super + ESOP About Programa Programa is on a mission to modernise the architecture and interior design industry, building the essential infrastructure that connects designers, brands, suppliers and clients on one platform. Founded in 2020 and now Series B funded, Programa is used by over 5,500 paying customers in 85 countries, including 1 in 4 designers in Australia and 1,000+ studios in the US. The platform manages 180,000+ active projects, from the first schedule item to the final invoice. We're growing fast, and we're building for the next stage. About the role Every product, material and finish on a Programa project schedule eventually gets bought. Today, that purchase happens off-platform; in email threads and spreadsheets, disconnected from the project it belongs to. We've already brought the client side of that onto Programa: studios invoice and collect payment through the platform today, and usage is growing quickly. The supplier side is our next build, and it's the single biggest area of investment for Programa over the next few years. As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll own that build; designing and shipping the systems that onboard suppliers as payees, split and settle funds between designer, supplier and platform, and handle payouts and multi-currency across a global customer base (the US is our largest market). This isn't a payments team of one bolted onto the side of the business; it's core to how Programa grows. What you'll do Design and build supplier-side payment flows: payee onboarding and verification, KYC/KYB, split settlement, payouts, reconciliation and chargebacks.Build all of it against the project record, not as a standalone billing system - every payment needs to stay consistent with the quote it came from, the schedule line it was specified against, and the client approval behind it.Take end-to-end ownership of problems: research, design, build, ship, and iterate based on real usage - working directly with Product, Design and our internal CX team.Specify work clearly and use agentic AI tools (Claude Code, Cursor, or similar) as a core part of how you build day-to-day, rigorously validating everything they produce.Contribute to the wider engineering culture - improving tooling, developer experience, and how the team plans and ships. What you'll bring Full-stack engineering experience, with a track record of shipping and owning production systems end-to-end; AI does most of the implementation (See Below for how Programa uses AI)Hands-on experience deploying and operating applications on AWS (serverless, containers, Lambdas, S3, RDS, etc.).Marketplace or platform payments experience - Stripe Connect, Adyen for Platforms, or equivalent. We're looking for genuine multi-party payment flows (onboarding third parties as payees, KYC/KYB, split settlement, payouts, reconciliation, chargebacks), not standard checkout or card processing.A product-engineering mindset - you think end-to-end about user value and trade-offs, and evaluate a problem before reaching for a solution.Demonstrable, hands-on fluency with agentic AI coding tools as part of your daily workflow — comfortable specifying work well, running agents against those specs, and rigorously validating the output.Strong initiative - you spot opportunities to improve processes, developer experience and best practices, and you act on them without being asked.Working rights in Australia. Nice to have: Modern Rails (7.x), Hotwire, Stimulus and Turbo experience.Experience integrating ML/AI APIs (OpenAI, Bedrock) or vector search.Python and data tooling (Snowflake, dbt).A DevOps-centric mindset — comfortable identifying friction in the pipeline and fixing it.Experience in startup or scale-up environments. They're also actively working on "context engineering" - getting the most out of LLMs by managing context window usage and using sub-agents for parallel work without polluting context.Tooling in daily use: Claude Code with custom slash commands and workflows for research, planning, and design-system components; Claude Desktop for cross-team collaboration within a shared Project; and Figma Make, so PMs, designers, and engineers can build working prototypes quickly without waiting on engineering.What they're building toward: reusable orchestration layers that encode the team's own knowledge and standards, and workflows where non-technical people (designers, PMs) can safely contribute code changes with proper guardrails.
