The role We're looking for an experienced (Senior) Software Engineer to help build the Uncertainty Engine - the platform at the heart of everything we do at digiLab. In this role, you'll design and build the scalable, secure systems that power trustworthy AI for customers tackling some of society's hardest problems. This is a hands-on technical role that combines deep backend expertise with a collaborative, product-minded approach. What you'll do Lead the design, development, and maintenance of high-quality software, owning solutions from architecture through to deploymentBuild scalable systems using AWS, Python, MongoDB, and other modern technologiesEmbed security best practices across the full software development lifecycleOwn and improve our CI/CD pipelines to keep deployments fast, reliable, and repeatableApply site reliability engineering principles to strengthen system performance and resiliencePartner with product management to translate business requirements into elegant technical solutionsDesign clean, consistent RESTful APIsProvide technical support and lead incident investigationsChampion Scrum and drive continuous improvement in how the team worksFoster a collaborative, learning-oriented environment where engineers growIn addition to backend work, you may also be required to support tasks on the frontend — we value engineers who enjoy working across the stackAdopt AI tools to assist and accelerate your work Duties may evolve, and you may be asked to take on other reasonable responsibilities within your competence as we grow. Your Experience Significant industry experience building production softwareDeep Python expertise, with clean, logical, self-explanatory codeProven experience building production APIs with FastAPI (or similar async Python frameworks)Hands-on experience deploying AWS infrastructure as code (IaC)Degree-level qualification in computer science or a related fieldExperience with DevOps and MLOps Solid grasp of software design patterns, SOLID and DRY principles, and architectural patternsConfidence with Git/GitHub, Docker and containerisation, Linux, bash, and the command lineCommand of the testing pyramid and automated testing types (unit, component, smoke, performance, load, end-to-end)Familiarity with modern statistical ML and AI tooling, including NumPy, SciPy, and PandasA track record of collaborating in a fast-paced agile team, ideally using Scrum Nice to have A Master's-level qualification in a STEM fieldFrontend experience: HTML, CSS, React, JavaScript/TypeScriptAn eye for UI/UX design principlesExperience with PyTorch or other deep-learning librariesAn understanding of Bayesian statistics Location: This role is on-site at our Exeter or Bristol office.
