About The Role We are seeking a highly skilled Principal AI Software Engineer to join our dynamic team. In this senior, hands-on role, you will be instrumental in translating our AI vision into secure, reliable, and scalable product capabilities. Your primary responsibility will be designing, developing, and deploying advanced AI functionalities that directly impact our enterprise platform. You will work closely with cross-functional teams including product management, security, architecture, and customer success to ensure our AI solutions are trustworthy, efficient, and aligned with business goals. This role offers an opportunity to lead technical initiatives, influence architectural decisions, and contribute to the evolution of Matrix42’s AI offerings. You will be a technical multiplier, mentoring junior engineers, turning innovative prototypes into production-ready systems, and helping shape the future of enterprise AI integration. Qualifications 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a proven track record of delivering customer-facing software in production environments.Proficiency in Python and strong expertise in at least one product engineering language such as C#, TypeScript, or Java.Hands-on experience building and operating large language model (LLM) or agentic applications, including retrieval, grounding, embeddings, structured outputs, and tool calling.Experience working with data-intensive systems, APIs, event streaming, data ingestion, transformation, and operational observability.Strong system design fundamentals for API-first, distributed, cloud-native SaaS products, including security, identity management, and multi-tenant architecture.Practical knowledge in evaluating and diagnosing AI systems through datasets, telemetry, automated testing, and production monitoring.Ability to translate complex use cases into technical requirements, balancing rapid validation with scalable solutions.Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and with customers.Degree in computer science, software engineering, AI/ML, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. Responsibilities Own end-to-end development of selected AI capabilities, from problem discovery and design to implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement.Develop, review, and maintain production code for AI services, APIs, data pipelines, and product interfaces.Design agentic systems incorporating retrieval, grounding, structured outputs, tool execution, and context management, ensuring simplicity and robustness.Translate use cases into platform requirements, including API integrations, data ingestion, governance, and trustworthiness considerations.Create early prototypes to validate AI solutions within real workflows, iterating towards scalable, secure, multi-tenant product features.Implement evaluation frameworks, including datasets, telemetry, automated tests, and human reviews to ensure quality, safety, and performance.Engineer for enterprise trust by implementing tenant isolation, access controls, auditability, and safety measures such as prompt-injection defenses and safe rollbacks.Collaborate with cross-functional teams to turn customer needs into measurable outcomes, contribute reusable components, and promote best practices in applied AI engineering.
