Senior Java Software Engineer

About The Role As a Senior Java Engineer, you will build and maintain the back-end services behind business-critical applications at our Client, a European public sector organisation working in the area of competition policy. You will own the business logic, APIs, and data storage solutions you deliver, along with their speed, scalability, and security — working with Java and Spring over relational data, Elasticsearch for search, and Kafka for event streaming in a distributed architecture. Responsibilities Develop back-end web applications and services, implement core business logic, and design and develop APIsOptimise applications for maximum speed and scalability, and apply data and security best practices — input validation, authentication and authorisation, secure storage, and compliant logging and monitoring — including the mechanisms that secure API endpoints and servicesIntegrate user-facing elements developed by front-end developers with server-side logic, and take part with the team in the design and creation of scalable softwareDesign and implement data storage solutions, and develop and maintain services and business logic using one or more back-end programming languagesWrite clean, functional code on the back end, and maintain code integrity and organisationWrite and maintain unit and integration tests to ensure code quality and reliability, integrate them into the CI/CD pipeline, and debug, fix, and validate code changesCompile and analyse data, processes, and code to troubleshoot problems and identify areas for improvement, including setting up and querying monitoring toolsPerform basic configuration of cloud services for back-end functionality such as serverless functions, storage accounts, and managed Kubernetes, deliver solutions that fulfil functional and non-functional requirements, and write technical documentation Requirements A university degree at master's level (or 5 years of higher education) with a minimum of 10 years of IT professional experience; or a degree at bachelor's level (or 3 years of higher education) with a minimum of 12 yearsMinimum 5 years of experience in software development and minimum 5 years developing Java applications, with proficiency in back-end languages (Java, PHP) and frameworks (Spring Boot, Hibernate, Node.js) and a strong understanding of the web development cycleMinimum 5 years of experience with the Spring FrameworkMinimum 3 years of experience with Elasticsearch, including data indexing, search optimisation, query design, and performance monitoringMinimum 3 years of experience with Apache Kafka, covering event streaming, message brokering, topic management, and integration within distributed system architecturesExperience with REST API development, including designing, building, and securing RESTful APIs and web services with OpenAPI/Swagger documentation, and understanding of authentication and authorisation protocols and standards (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT)Experience with SQL databases, including relational databases such as PostgreSQL, Oracle, and MySQL with complex SQL queries and database design, together with knowledge of NoSQL document stores (MongoDB, CouchDB, CosmosDB) and the consistency and performance trade-offs involvedExperience working in Agile environments, with Git workflows (GitFlow, trunk-based) and an understanding of legacy systems using SVN, containerisation and orchestration technologies (Docker, Kubernetes), APM tools (Dynatrace, Splunk, Elastic APM) and OpenTelemetry for metrics, logs and traces, Case Management tools including workflow configuration, case lifecycle handling, user support and process optimisation, and professional experience in the area of competition policyVery good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, corresponding to Level B2 or higher (CEFR) SoftServe is an equal opportunity employer.
