Description

Over 30 years, we've grown from a single computer into a global, ASX-listed, technology-enabled lottery and prize draw group, with operations across Australia, the UK, Canada and the USA. Today, our technology and services power government and charity lottery programs, while our consumer brands connect millions of customers with life-changing prizes. We're still growing and evolving, with new businesses, markets and opportunities changing how we operate at global scale. That means the people who do their best work here are comfortable with ambiguity, think laterally, take real ownership of their work, and adapt well to change. What will you be doing? We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead Team Handy, a five-person cross-functional team (Front End, Backend, QA and Android) working on the Jumbo Lottery platform. Reporting to one of our Principal Engineering Managers, you'll oversee the technical direction of the team's deliverables and continuation of its roadmap objectives. This is a hands-on leadership role: you'll lead the team while contributing directly to the codebase, shaping solutions, and reviewing technical work. The team works across a variety of product initiatives, including, recently, ticket purchasing and bulk ticket purchasing, RSL features, and a Velocity frequent flyer integration. What Your Day-to-Day Will Look Like Lead and support a small engineering team, setting the direction for how it plans, delivers, and improves its work.Stay close to the code by contributing patches, reviewing code, and building a deep understanding of the platform and your domain.Work with a business analyst and product designer to develop technical specifications and solution designs for roadmap problems.Build and maintain a practical delivery rhythm, including retrospectives and continuous improvement.Help shape a more stable roadmap to maintain around 12 weeks of planned work for the team.Use artificial intelligence-assisted tools, including Claude Code, for activities such as work shaping, sprint planning, code and architectural research, patching, and code review.Drive technical quality through sound solution design, engineering practices, and clear communication.Make architectural decisions and assess technical feasibility, including for database and data-schema changes.Partner with Delivery Lead and Business Analyst to clarify team outcomes, identify delivery impediments early, and manage delivery risks and trade-offs.Coach engineers' career development, give regular feedback, and support the team to build the skills needed to deliver and support its systems.Support resource planning, hiring, and performance-management activities. What Success Looks Like In your first six to nine months, you'll build a deep understanding of the Jumbo Lottery platform and become a subject-matter expert in your domain. You'll be an active technical contributor who can assess and improve solution designs, review code, and help Team Handy deliver its roadmap with a practical, forward-looking plan of work. What You’ll Be Able to Bring to the Role Hands-on software development experience, including operating at a senior-engineer level. The technical depth to gain a strong understanding of a complex codebase and become a subject-matter expert in a software domain.Experience designing solutions and applying engineering best practices at scale.Experience working with databases and data schemas; structured query language experience is relevant regardless of flavour. The ability to assess, review, and contribute production-quality code rather than leading solely through people management.Strong communication skills and the ability to work closely with product and delivery partners.Thoughtful, practical perspectives on using artificial intelligence in software development workflows.Effective planning and prioritisation skills.Experience working with Agile delivery approaches, such as Scrum or Kanban, and project-management tools. Jumbo's engineering stack includes React and TypeScript on the front end, and Go and PHP on the back end, alongside Docker and PostgreSQL. You'll work in an Agile environment that uses continuous integration and continuous delivery, test automation, and code-quality practices. Deep experience in every technology is not required: if you bring strong technical depth and hands-on experience in another stack, you'll be able to adapt quickly. Currently, team Handy has a Wednesday Connect Day and uses Scrum practices, while adapting its delivery approach to the work at hand. As Engineering Manager, you'll have scope to set the tone for the team's ways of working, with retrospectives and continuous improvement expected.
