Job Description
The Data Science & AI team sits within Nine's Digital group, building AI-powered products that create genuine value for Nine's business and its audiences.
The team operates across two complementary tracks: a Data Science function focused on modelling and business optimisation; and an AI Engineering function that designs and ships production AI software.
As Software Engineer within the AI Engineering function you will build and maintain the software that powers our AI products.
You are a disciplined backend software engineer who wants to apply software engineering rigour to production systems, internal agentic automation, and high-traffic audience features.
What You’ll Do
Build & Ship: Write clean, scalable Python code to develop production backend services, APIs, and data pipelines across GCP and AWS (EKS).
Maintain Engineering Standards: Champion code quality through test-driven development, thoughtful PR reviews, and adherence to modern architecture patterns.
Systems & Delivery: Partner closely with the Tech Lead and AI Product team to break down requirements into deliverable, maintainable software components.
Operational Stability: Support CI/CD deployment pipelines, system observability, and monitoring to maintain high-availability tools in production.
What You’ll Bring
3–5 years of commercial software engineering experience building, shipping, and maintaining backend systems.
Proficiency in Python or similar, with an emphasis on writing readable, testable, and maintainable code.
Solid experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and backend microservices.
Hands-on working knowledge of cloud environments (AWS or GCP).
Familiarity with DevOps practices: Git, CI/CD workflows, automated testing frameworks, and basic cloud deployment.
A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
Desirable
Familiarity with Go, Docker, Kubernetes (EKS/GKE), or Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/OpenTofu).
Some exposure to or curiosity about integrating LLM APIs, vector databases, or RAG frameworks.
Experience in digital media, publishing, or digital content platforms.
