Backend Software Engineer

THE ROLE: We're hiring a Software Engineer to join our E-commerce Team and play a pivotal role in shaping the backbone of our innovative Software as a Service (SaaS) products. This isn't a typical frontend role: we're looking for someone who's already adapted to building software in the AI era — who thinks in systems, moves comfortably across the stack, and treats AI tools as part of the craft, not a shortcut around it. How you think, how fast you iterate, and how fearlessly you push past "good enough" matter more to us than years logged or job titles. You'll join a team with strong engineering proficiency that spends its time on problems that actually matter and shares a real passion for building products from the ground up, regardless of stack. YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES: Bring a working AI-augmented workflow into daily development — prompting, orchestrating agents, and critically reviewing AI-generated output before it ships;Develop and maintain high-quality, scalable backend applications with appropriate backend tech like PHP, Python, and Node.js, applying best practices with full ownership from design through production and performance;Work fluently in Git within a big team, where collaboration is a must;Partner closely with Product Managers, Front-End engineers, QAs, and DevOps to ship features end-to-end. Be responsible for systems and products that serve 3M+ websites;Write clean, well-tested code that the next engineer can build on without fear;Ship iteratively and often, favoring fast feedback loops and continuous improvement;Share knowledge, challenge ideas, and continuously raise the bar for our engineering practices and the team;Care deeply about performance, reliability, and craft - own the outcome, not just the task OUR EXPECTATIONS: Demonstrate strong proficiency in using, evaluating, and experimenting with AI-based technologies to improve engineering workflows, solve complex problems, and increase development effectiveness;Deep understanding of the HTTP stack, networking fundamentals, CI/CD pipelines, software testing, observability, and distributed systems;Strong understanding of software architecture, APIs, databases, caching, messaging, and asynchronous processing;Take end-to-end ownership — from the first question to a verified result in production;Bring a strong focus on software performance and proactive extensibility;Ability to critically evaluate technical solutions and determine whether they are the right fit for the problem, not just whether they work;Have experience establishing engineering standards, component architectures, and development best practices;Ability to clearly communicate technical trade-offs and complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences;Have proven experience scaling systems that serve millions of users globally;Ability to work effectively with ambiguity and incomplete informationBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or the equivalent gained through hands-on experience, open-source work, or a technical write-up sharp enough to speak for itself GREAT ADVANTAGE WILL BE: If AI is an output multiplier for you;If you are even more passionate about your work than ever before;If you bring a team-first mindset and care more about solving the problem than proving you’re right;If you get excited at the prospect of shipping tech products that push the web forward Come and make a difference at SiteGround with people who inspire you to grow!
