Senior Backend Engineer – PHP and Symfony A fantastic opportunity for a Senior Backend Engineer to join a growing, integration-focused SaaS company. Working within a small and experienced engineering team, you will build and maintain a wide range of production integrations with external software platforms. This is a highly autonomous role combining hands-on PHP and Symfony development with complex third-party API integration work and increasing ownership of the company’s AWS infrastructure. Location: Fully remote within the UK. Ideally, you will be based near London, as you must be available to travel to London for occasional team meetings. Salary: £55,000 - £70,000 per annum depending on experience. Additional paid weekend on-call rota, performance bonus and share options. Requirements for Senior Backend Engineer: Strong commercial experience developing production software using PHPCommercial experience using SymfonyProven experience building and maintaining multiple third-party integrations in productionExperience with REST APIs, webhooks, OAuth, rate limiting, retries, error handling and asynchronous systemsStrong production experience with AWS, including containers, monitoring and incident responseExperience with infrastructure as code, ideally TerraformStrong understanding of automated testing, code quality and CI/CD practicesExperience independently troubleshooting integrations involving external systems and incomplete documentationA pragmatic approach to engineering, with the ability to balance technical quality against commercial delivery requirementsComfortable working autonomously within a small, fully remote engineering teamConfident proposing solutions and challenging technical decisions constructivelyWillingness to participate in a paid weekend on-call rota -approx. once a month (you will be paid even if no calls are taken)Based in the UK, with the right to workExperience within payments, travel technology, marketplaces, hospitality or another integration-heavy SaaS environment would be beneficial Responsibilities for Senior Backend Engineer: Design, build and maintain multiple third-party integrations using PHP and SymfonyDevelop individual microservices connecting the platform with external APIs and webhook-based systemsTake ownership of a new family of integrations from initial design through to productionContribute to platform and API features across the wider software estateInvestigate production issues and identify whether problems originate from the code, configuration or an external platformLearn the existing AWS environment and progress towards significant infrastructure ownershipImprove observability, automated testing and CI/CD quality gates across the platformSupport upgrades to current versions of PHP and SymfonyContribute informed opinions to architectural decisions as the platform continues to scaleParticipate in a paid weekend on-call rota supporting urgent out-of-hours issuesCollaborate asynchronously through messaging, pull requests and focused technical discussions What this role offers: Significant technical ownership within a growing, integration-focused SaaS businessThe opportunity to influence architecture, engineering practices and the future direction of the platformExcellent longer-term scope to take on wider technical and management responsibilities as the company grows Applications: If you would like to apply for this unique Senior Backend Engineer role, please send your CV via the relevant links!
