R&D is the small group at OxBlue that answers the questions to help position the company to meet future client needs.
We take a technology or a problem and quickly iterate to have a working prototype or test that helps give our development and product team guidance.
This role involves solving complex problems and staying up to date with the latest advancements in software development.
We are looking for a software engineer to prototype and build new cutting-edge features.
After you research and prototype, you’ll be expected to write specifications and tickets for Backend Software Engineers to implement.
As an R&D Software Engineer you'll be expected to have proficiency in working with PHP and Python as well relational and nonrelational databases.
You’ll also be expected to work within Linux CLI and create tests.
Using LLM, AI agents and harnesses is a requirement.You should be able to have vision on how a problem can be solved using technology.
This is a role for someone who is comfortable exploring new technologies and sharing their findings and knowledge with others.

You will:
Quickly prototype web applications and systems to evaluate using new technologies for our upcoming products.
Work with our product team and other stakeholders to help shape new product features.Design and build backend microservices in Laravel and PHP.
This includes but is not limited to API contracts, queue workers, webhooks, health checks and other features that other OxBlue teams consume.Design, implement and maintain Python backend services and jobs that work in Linux environments.Integrate LLMs and vision-language models against real jobsite imagery and video, and turn fuzzy model output into contracts other services can rely on.Work directly with camera hardware APIs and streaming video.
Create specifications and tickets for Backend and Infrastructure Engineers to work on.
You have:
3+ years building and shipping production backend software, with real depth in PHP and a modern framework, Laravel preferred.
Python experience is needed as well.Fluency in SQL and relational design: you can read a schema you've never seen, find out what's actually in it, and explain it concisely.Comfort with Linux and with HTTP APIs, queues, and services that talk to other services.Hands-on experience integrating third-party APIs.A passion for problem solving and courage to be the subject matter expert on technical topics and features.Genuinely good technical writing for documentation and ticket specifications.
Bonus points
Experience with IP cameras, ONVIF, RTSP/HLS, or embedded devices in the field.Observability tooling: Prometheus, Grafana, Loki.Vue.js, for when a prototype needs a face.CI/CD, Docker and Package Management.
