Highlights
Remote-first platform engineering opportunity focused on secure, reliable digital infrastructure. The role offers work with Kubernetes, GitOps, open-source technologies, automation, and privacy-sensitive systems in a mission-driven healthcare technology environment.
Description
Do you love taking on new challenges and want to help us pursue our mission to make digital communication in healthcare secure and reliable? Then we are looking for you as a Platform Engineer β Kubernetes & GitOps (m/f/d) to strengthen our team!
Since our founding in 2019, Famedly has been working to digitize medical communication processes in a data-protection-compliant way and revolutionize the healthcare system.
Famedly brought the first gematik-certified TI-Messenger to market to improve communication and collaboration within the healthcare sector.
Famedly enables medical teams to exchange sensitive patient information, images, and other files in real time from anywhere β from medication plans and lab results to X-ray images.
As a dynamic, remote-first startup based in Berlin with a growing and experienced team, we work together every day toward our vision of a healthcare system without information barriers.
Famedly relies on open-source software and primarily uses and actively contributes to Matrix and FHIR.
As a Platform Engineer β Kubernetes & GitOps (m/f/d), you will be part of a talented team of developers at all levels and play a central role in building and operating the next generation of our infrastructure.
We are actively migrating from an Ansible-based VM deployment model to a Kubernetes-based platform managed via GitOps.
Our clusters are self-hosted and self-managed (bare metal and cloud VMs) - we deliberately do not use managed Kubernetes offerings.
Your responsibilities
Design, and build our Kubernetes platform across multiple self-hosted clusters
Operate self-hosted Kubernetes clusters end to end: upgrades, CNI networking, storage, load balancing, and DNS
Provision and lifecycle-manage infrastructure with OpenTofu and Terragrunt: writing and reviewing modules, state management, plan/apply workflows
Develop and maintain our GitOps workflows with Argo CD (app-of-apps model, Helm-based deployments)
Operate and evolve core platform services such as Harbor, OpenBao, Zitadel
Build and improve observability across the platform (Grafana, Mimir, Loki, Tempo, Alloy) and contribute to actionable alerting
Manage secrets, backups, and data services (e.g.
CNPG/PostgreSQL, Barman)
Partner with product engineering teams to migrate services from Ansible/VM-based deployments to Kubernetes and define reusable deployment standards
Improve developer experience through documentation, templates, golden paths, and self-service platform capabilities
Troubleshoot platform issues across infrastructure, networking, and application layers (2nd-level support)
Participate in on-call duties to ensure stable platform operations
What you should bring
Several years of experience in infrastructure engineering, platform engineering or DevOps
Hands-on experience operating self-hosted/self-managed Kubernetes in production: cluster upgrades, networking, storage, and troubleshooting without relying on a cloud provider's managed control plane.
Daily GitOps practice: you ship changes via Git pull requests and Argo CD (or Flux) reconciliation, with solid Git fundamentals (branching, reviews, rebasing)
Experience with monitoring and observability for distributed systems (e.g.
Grafana, Prometheus/Mimir, Loki)
Scripting and automation skills (e.g.
Nix, Bash)
Familiarity with CI/CD workflows and production deployment practices (progressive rollouts, rollbacks, health checks)
Strong problem-solving skills, clear communication, and a proactive ownership mindset
Very good English skills, written and spoken
Nice to have
Ideally a completed IT apprenticeship or degree β or equivalent qualifications through professional experience
Experience with Talos Linux or other minimal/immutable Kubernetes operating systems
Bare-metal operations: RAID/LVM storage, out-of-band access, hardware lifecycle
Experience with secrets management (e.g.
OpenBao/Vault, External Secrets Operator)
Experience with PostgreSQL operators (e.g.
CNPG) and backup/restore workflows
Prior involvement in large-scale infrastructure migrations
Experience in regulated or security-sensitive environments
Please note: For this position, we are currently only able to consider applications from candidates located within the EU/EEA.
