Description

The Operational Unit BEYOND Centre for Earth Observation Research and Satellite Remote Sensing of the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing of the National Observatory of Athens is seeking a motivated EO Software Engineer to join our team and support applied research at the intersection of large-scale Earth Observation, climate science, and Artificial Intelligence. The selected candidate will join the Big Data pillar of the Operational Unit, working primarily on the user interfaces of our research web applications, and will have the opportunity to grow alongside experienced engineers and scientists. Responsibilities: ● Build and maintain user interfaces for BEYOND’s research EO web applications. ● Turn designs and requirements into clean, responsive, and accessible UI components. ● Work closely with senior engineers to integrate frontend components with existing APIs and services. ● Collaborate with experts across domains (AI, civil engineering, agriculture, energy, biodiversity) to understand user needs. ● Help maintain and improve existing interfaces based on user feedback. ● Write clear documentation for the components and features you build. You may also: ● Get exposure to Earth Observation and GIS concepts through project work. ● Participate in code reviews and team discussions to keep growing your skills. Qualifications: ● Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, GeoInformatics or a related field, or extensive relevant work experience. ● JavaScript experience and at least one modern frontend framework (React, Angular, or Vue). ● Familiarity with HTML/CSS and building responsive layouts. ● Basic understanding of how frontend applications connect to backend APIs and REST. ● Good knowledge of Python. ● Familiarity with Git-based workflows (Github/GitLab). ● Willingness to learn, ask questions, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team. ● Good English communication (written and spoken). Will be considered a plus: ● Familiarity with mapping/visualization libraries (e.g., Leaflet, Mapbox, OpenLayers) ● Familiarity with deck.gl ● Familiarity with Django ● Experience with EO/data libraries (rasterio, xarray, Dask, datacube, pystac). ● Interest in learning about backend, containers (Docker) and cloud environments. ● Any exposure to Jupyter notebooks or data-related tooling.
