We are seeking an experienced EL2 Principal Platform Engineer to lead complex platform engineering initiatives within a major Federal Government environment. This role will focus on building secure, scalable and reusable cloud platform capabilities across AWS and Azure, improving developer self-service and establishing engineering standards that support reliable technology delivery. Contract Details Initial 12-month contract with a further 12-month extension optionOpen market hourly ratesLocations available in Melbourne (Richmond), Geelong, Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney or PerthHybrid working arrangementsAustralian citizenship is mandatoryCandidates must be able to obtain an NV1 security clearance Key Responsibilities Design, build and continuously improve secure, reusable cloud platform services across AWS and Azure.Establish platform standards, golden paths, templates, guardrails and automated delivery patterns.Lead platform roadmap planning, governance, reference architecture and lifecycle management.Improve developer experience through internal developer platforms, self-service capabilities, clear documentation and reusable engineering patterns.Embed automated security controls, vulnerability management, policy-as-code and compliance checks across platform services.Improve platform reliability through observability, monitoring, alerting, incident response and service health practices.Partner with delivery, architecture, security and operations teams to resolve complex issues and promote consistent platform engineering practices.Support critical services through participation in after-hours on-call arrangements. About You Extensive experience designing, implementing and operating secure, scalable platforms across AWS and Azure.Deep expertise in containerisation, Kubernetes and orchestration technologies.Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code, particularly Terraform, along with CI/CD automation and standardised engineering toolchains.Experience with tools such as GitLab, GitHub, Artifactory and Jira.Strong knowledge of secure platform engineering, including automated testing, vulnerability management and compliance automation.Experience designing internal developer platforms, service mesh architectures and developer self-service capabilities.The ability to establish platform governance frameworks, engineering standards, reference architectures and operational controls.Strong stakeholder engagement, technical leadership and complex troubleshooting capabilities. Experience with Backstage, OpenTelemetry, distributed tracing, HashiCorp Vault and enterprise observability practices will be highly regarded.
