Summary ✨ AI‑Generated

An early-stage Australian technology startup is hiring a DevOps and Cloud Engineer to help build and operate a sovereign high-performance computing cluster. This is hands-on infrastructure engineering rather than a monitoring-only role, supporting demanding AI, scientific computing, and research workloads. The position is full-time and Sydney-based, and candidates must already have full working rights or permanent residency in Australia.

Highlights

Join an early-stage Australian startup building sovereign high-performance computing infrastructure. The role offers hands-on ownership from the beginning, exposure to demanding AI and scientific workloads, and the opportunity to help build nationally significant infrastructure from the ground up.

Description

About the role Australia has the talent to build world-class AI infrastructure. We have always exported it. We are done with that. If you have built at the highest level and you are ready to build something sovereign, something ours, this is the moment. We have completed our PoC and are now scaling our sovereign cluster. This is hands-on infrastructure work from day one, not monitoring dashboards. The platform we are building can run cancer research, scientific computing, and the AI workloads that actually matter for this country. We are not building another SaaS tool. We are building infrastructure that changes what Australia can do. If that is the kind of work you have been waiting for, come talk to us. We are an early-stage Australian startup growing our DevOps team and hiring a DevOps and Cloud Engineer to help own the infrastructure layer, reporting to the Director of DevOps. This is a full-time role, Sydney based, with full working rights or permanent residency required. What you will do • Own and operate our AWS environment: EC2 (including GPU instances), RDS, S3, IAM, CloudWatch, VPC and supporting services • Build a fully scripted teardown and startup cycle to control overnight and idle infrastructure costs • Build and maintain the provider integration layer that connects our orchestration engine across multiple compute environments • Stand up and maintain CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code for the whole platform • Configure performance reporting so it reflects real user-facing behaviour, excluding synthetic monitoring, health checks and internal test traffic • Track infrastructure spend weekly and maintain a runbook and architecture summary suitable for technical and investor review What you will need • Strong hands-on AWS across EC2, RDS, S3, IAM, CloudWatch and VPC • Proven infrastructure-as-code experience (Terraform, CDK or equivalent) • Experience building CI/CD pipelines for multi-service backends • Containerised workload deployment and GPU instance management • Monitoring and observability tooling (CloudWatch, Datadog or similar) • A genuinely cost-conscious mindset. You know what cloud costs and you manage it actively. The infrastructure is not a support function here. It is the product. You will own it, and your work will directly shape whether this company succeeds. To apply Apply with your CV and a short note (3 to 5 sentences) on what environments you have owned and what they cost to run. No recruiters.
