About The Role
We are seeking a self-motivated Front-End Engineer to join our Front-End Foundations team, which is responsible for developing and maintaining Manulife's internal React component library that implements our enterprise design system.
This library powers over 100 active digital properties across our Canadian and US segments and is recognized as the standard for React development within the organization.
The role involves building accessible, high-quality React components, tooling, and documentation to support thousands of engineers who rely on these resources daily.
As a product engineering role, the library is the product, and developers are the customers.
You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including designers, architects, and product managers, to ensure the delivery of scalable, reusable, and accessible front-end solutions that align with enterprise standards and future growth initiatives.
Your contributions will directly impact the consistency, accessibility, and quality of our digital experiences, enabling us to deliver superior customer and employee experiences.
Qualifications
5 or more years of experience building production front-end applications or shared libraries, preferably in complex enterprise environmentsDeep expertise in React and TypeScript, along with modern CSS techniquesPractical experience with accessibility standards, including semantic HTML, ARIA practices, focus and keyboard management, and testing with assistive technologiesProven track record of building reusable libraries, design systems, or shared platforms consumed by multiple teamsStrong testing discipline covering unit, integration, visual regression, and automated accessibility checksFamiliarity with monorepos, CI/CD pipelines, release automation, and semantic versioningExperience in driving cultural change within enterprise engineering teamsExcellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of articulating technical vision, trade-offs, and outcomes to technical and non-technical stakeholdersKnowledge of agile methodologies, DevOps principles, test-driven development, and continuous integration practices
Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain accessible, well-tested React components, design tokens, and tooling aligned with the enterprise design systemEnsure accessibility compliance, striving for WCAG 2.2 AA level, implementing ARIA practices, keyboard interactions, and assistive technology supportDesign robust, backward-compatible APIs for components used across hundreds of applications, including deprecation strategies and migration guidanceExtend documentation platforms, live code sandboxes, examples, and Figma integrations to facilitate seamless adoption and learning for development teamsContribute to AI-native tooling efforts, including MCP server, Copilot agent skills, and generative UI guardrails, to ensure AI-generated interfaces adhere to accessibility and branding standardsHelp evolve a shared headless component core to support multiple platforms, including web and mobile, promoting code reuse and consistencySupport and triage issues within the engineering community, review external contributions, and unblock delivery teams to maintain momentumCollaborate closely with designers, architects, and product teams within an agile framework to identify pain points and accelerate delivery of new business features
