AI Engineer | Sydney | $160k + super
A leading Australian media company, home to some of the country's most recognised news, sport and entertainment brands, is growing its data science and AI team.
We're hiring an AI Engineer to help build the agentic AI products used across the business.
The team sits centrally, made up of 5 to 6 data scientists and ML engineers plus 2 AI engineers, acting as a platform and trailblazer for the wider organisation.
They've already shipped 2 agents into production (built on Google's Agent Development Kit) and have 3 to 4 more use cases live across other teams, one of them an external facing video ad platform built for SME brands, the rest internal productivity tools.
A skeleton framework the team built lets other teams clone and build their own agents in a governed, secure way.
The roadmap has 2 more agents next quarter, 4 to 6 by year end, with another 6 to 10 supported across the business.
What you'll be doing
Designing, building and testing scalable, observable, production grade agentic AI solutions.
Engineering and optimising prompts, chains and workflows for LLMs.
Integrating AI agents with internal systems and third party APIs.
Running proper test plans (unit, integration, UAT) and iterating on what's already live.
What we're looking for
This is a software engineering role first.
You don't need to be a data scientist or ML engineer, and you don't need industry specific experience.
What matters most is listed below.
Strong software engineering fundamentals and production experience Comfortable working with LLMs, LLM APIs, and frameworks like LangChain or LlamaIndex Python proficiency Know how to containerise an application (you won't need deep Kubernetes, platform engineering owns infrastructure) Solid understanding of the software development lifecycleNice to haves, agentic AI design patterns, RAG, vector databases, GCP, observability experience, or having built your own small RAG application.
Interview process
A 45 minute conversation, then a 1 hour technical session (whiteboard style, in person preferred).
The setup
3 days a week in the office, with the team anchoring in together on Mondays.
