Description
About the Role
We are seeking a talented and forward-thinking AWS Cloud Engineer to join our engineering team.
You will be instrumental in designing, building, and operating cloud-native applications and internal platforms on AWS, leveraging modern serverless and event-driven architectures.
This is a hands-on role for an engineer who thrives on automation, clean code, and delivering production-grade software at pace.
You will work closely with product, platform, and DevOps colleagues to deliver scalable backend services and infrastructure, owning your work end-to-end from design through to deployment and monitoring.
Note this role is based in Nottingham and you will need to travel into the office 3 days a week.
Key Responsibilities:
Backend Engineering & AWS
Design, build, and maintain serverless applications using AWS Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3, SQS, and SNS.Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested TypeScript and/or Node.js code across microservices and event-driven workloads.Own the full development lifecycle of features: requirements, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and incident response.Build and maintain RESTful and event-driven APIs, ensuring performance, reliability, and security best practices.Manage and optimise DynamoDB data models and S3-based data pipelines to support scalable and cost-effective storage patterns.
Infrastructure as Code & CI/CD
Define, deploy, and manage cloud infrastructure using AWS CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform in a multi-environment AWS estate.Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or equivalent tooling to support frequent, reliable releases.Champion infrastructure automation standards, ensuring consistency and repeatability across dev, staging, and production environments.Contribute to platform reliability through proactive monitoring, alerting, and observability tooling (CloudWatch, X-Ray, or equivalent).
Security, Governance & IAM
Configure and manage AWS IAM roles, policies, and permission boundaries following least-privilege principles.Ensure platform components meet internal security standards, contributing to security reviews and audit requirements as needed.Apply best practices for secrets management using AWS Secrets Manager or Parameter Store.
Collaboration & Delivery
Work in an Agile team environment, participating in sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and technical design sessions.Collaborate with stakeholders across product, data, and infrastructure to deliver end-to-end platform capabilities.Contribute to internal documentation, runbooks, and architectural decision records (ADRs).
Required Skills & Experience
Strong, demonstrable experience in Node.js and/or TypeScript and JavaScript — including modern ES features, async patterns, and type-safe design.Strong hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code tools — specifically AWS CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform — in production environments.Strong experience writing automated and unit tests using Jest or an equivalent testing framework, with a commitment to quality engineering.Comfortable designing, building, and running core AWS services: Lambda, DynamoDB, IAM, S3, and associated integration services.Practical experience with CI/CD platforms such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, CircleCI, or equivalent to automate build, test, and deploy pipelines.Solid understanding of cloud security fundamentals — IAM, least-privilege access, secrets management, and secure API design.Ability to work in a cross-functional Agile team, contributing to planning, design, and delivery across the full software lifecycle.AWS certifications (e.g.
Solutions Architect, Developer Associate, or DevOps Engineer Professional).
