About the role As a Backend Engineer, you will design, build and evolve large-scale, mission-critical backend platforms serving a large customer base and supporting complex business processes. You will work in a modern engineering environment based on microservices, distributed systems, event-driven architecture, cloud-native technologies and continuous delivery. The solutions you develop may support Telekom locally or be shared and evolved across the Deutsche Telekom Group and its National Companies. This role is suited to an engineer who combines strong technical depth with ownership, sound architectural judgment, delivery responsibility and a collaborative mindset. Key responsibilities Own the complete lifecycle of backend services, from requirements analysis and technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, and production support.Design, develop and evolve scalable and maintainable Java/Spring Boot services.Contribute to system architecture, technical strategy, and architectural decision-making in distributed and microservices-based environments.Design resilient solutions for high-throughput, highly available and integration-heavy platforms.Define, implement and maintain RESTful APIs, integration contracts and service-to-service communication.Work with asynchronous communication, messaging and event-driven architectures.Design solutions using appropriate relational and NoSQL data stores.Identify and resolve performance, scalability, reliability and maintainability challenges.Build reusable components, libraries, patterns and engineering practices that support the long-term evolution of backend platforms.Implement automated unit, integration and end-to-end testing to ensure software quality and delivery confidence.Work with containerized and cloud-native environments, including Docker, Kubernetes, Helm and CI/CD pipelines.Contribute to observability through appropriate logging, metrics, tracing, monitoring and operational dashboards.Participate actively in technical discussions, architecture reviews, design sessions and code reviews.Lead technical initiatives and coordinate implementation across engineers and collaborating teams when required.Collaborate closely with product owners, business analysts, QA engineers, frontend engineers, DevOps teams, architects and other stakeholders.Mentor and support other engineers through onboarding, knowledge sharing, technical feedback and coaching.Contribute to shared engineering standards, guidelines, development practices, and reusable solutions across teams.Explore and apply emerging technologies, including AI-assisted engineering and AI-enabled backend solutions, where they provide measurable business or engineering value. Required skills Strong professional experience developing backend applications with Java.Strong experience with Spring Boot and the Spring ecosystem.Proven experience designing and operating microservices in production environments.Solid understanding of distributed systems, system integration and architectural trade-offs.Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and integration contracts.Experience with asynchronous communication, messaging or event-driven architectures.Experience with relational databases and SQL.Practical knowledge of at least one NoSQL database.Experience with automated testing and software quality practices.Experience with Docker, Kubernetes or other containerized environments.Understanding of CI/CD principles and modern software delivery practices.Ability to take ownership of technical solutions and drive them through to production.Ability to balance business requirements, delivery timelines, quality and long-term maintainability.Strong communication and collaboration skills in a multicultural and cross-functional environment.Professional working proficiency in English. Preferred skills Experience with Apache Kafka or other enterprise messaging platforms.Practical experience with MongoDB or other NoSQL databases.Experience with Redis, caching strategies or distributed in-memory data stores.Experience with Kubernetes, Helm, and cloud platforms such as Azure.Experience with observability, performance tuning and production troubleshooting.Experience with Domain-Driven Design, including bounded contexts, aggregates and service boundaries.Experience with Clean Architecture, Hexagonal Architecture or similar architectural approaches.Experience building shared platforms, reusable libraries or solutions consumed by multiple teams.Experience with Elasticsearch or other distributed search technologies.Experience with security mechanisms such as OAuth2, JWT and secure API integration.Familiarity with Python is considered a plus.Exposure to large-scale, highly available or mission-critical systems.Experience leading technical initiatives or mentoring engineers.Exposure to AI/LLM-enabled applications, RAG, embeddings and AI-assisted software development.
