The role
Energy Markets (EM) is the commercial heart of the SSE Group, securing value for SSE's asset portfolios in wholesale energy markets as we move towards our vision of being a leading energy company in a net zero world.
EM plays a critical role as the asset optimiser, route to market and risk management function for all SSE's Business Units (Wind, Hydro, Low Carbon Thermal, Distributed Energy and Customer portfolios).
EM enables SSE to focus its expertise and capabilities in energy markets (including Trading, Risk Management, Energy Economics and Advanced Analytics) in one centre of excellence and, with these enhanced capabilities, support value creation and decision-making across the SSE Group.
As a Senior Software Developer, you will join an Agile engineering team responsible for building and enhancing market execution and transaction processing applications within SSE Energy Markets.
You will focus on developing high‑performance, reliable backend services for cloud‑first, distributed systems operating across Azure‑based and on‑premise environments.
Your experience with cloud platforms, concurrency, and modern engineering practices will contribute directly to the ongoing modernisation of business‑critical market systems.
You will
Design, develop and support cloud‑first, scalable software solutions that underpin real‑time market execution and transaction processing systems.
You’ll work on distributed, event‑driven applications that demand high throughput, low latency, and strong consistency, operating primarily in Azure‑based environments with some exposure to other cloud platforms.
Contribute to the end‑to‑end delivery of business‑critical services, from application and API design through to service integration, packaging, and deployment, ensuring solutions are resilient, secure, and built for continuous evolution.
Embed observability and operational insight directly into applications by implementing structured logging, metrics, and alerting using platforms such as Azure Monitor and Splunk, enabling rapid diagnosis and confidence in complex, high‑volume systems.
Champion engineering excellence through clean design, automation, and security‑by‑default practices, improving developer workflows, reducing manual effort, and maintaining clear, pragmatic technical documentation to support long‑term system scalability and change.
You have
Strong backend engineering experience using .NET / C#, building high-throughput, event-driven distributed systems, with practical application of concurrency, profiling, performance analysis, and troubleshooting to optimise system behaviour.
Experience developing and operating real-time data processing or transaction-oriented systems, including event ingestion and streaming using Azure Event Hubs, messaging patterns, and scalable cloud-native architectures.
Strong understanding of data access and persistence patterns, including hands-on experience with Entity Framework Core, schema evolution through migrations, and working with both SQL Server and NoSQL technologies such as Azure Cosmos DB.
Proven experience with containerised application development using Docker, including local development, testing, packaging, and deployment of microservices and distributed applications.
Working knowledge of automated build, test, and deployment pipelines, using tools such as Azure DevOps Pipelines and GitHub Actions to support reliable software delivery.
Experience implementing and maintaining automated testing strategies, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing using frameworks such as TUnit and Playwright.
Working knowledge of Python for scripting, automation, data processing, and operational tooling would be advantageous.
