Project Description: We are looking for an Expert Java Engineer to lead hands-on technical engagements focused on improving the security, reliability, maintainability, and resilience of business-critical banking applications. This is a highly technical role combining software engineering, application modernization, DevOps, SRE, test automation, and application security. Around 70% of the work is hands-on coding, debugging, and configuration. You will work directly with development teams to solve complex challenges such as security vulnerabilities, outdated technologies, insufficient test coverage, production instability, and risky release processes. You will take ownership from the initial technical assessment through implementation, production deployment, stabilization, and knowledge transfer. Responsibilities Lead hands-on technical engagements focused on application modernization, security, testing, reliability, and release automation. Assess application code, dependencies, runtimes, test coverage, CI/CD pipelines, deployment architecture, and operational risks. Write, debug, review, and improve production-quality Java applications and configuration. Define and implement practical remediation and modernization plans. Build and improve automated testing, including unit, integration, regression, contract, and deployment smoke tests. Perform vulnerability triage, dependency and reachability analysis, and implement secure remediation. Upgrade Java/JVM, Spring, Node.js/npm, libraries, dependencies, and container base images. Modernize legacy Java applications and middleware, including WebSphere and WebLogic environments. Improve CI/CD pipelines, release automation, rollback procedures, and production validation. Containerize applications using Docker and support deployments to OpenShift or Kubernetes. Introduce observability and resilience practices, including logging, metrics, tracing, health checks, and alerting. Lead technical discussions, code reviews, workshops, coaching, and knowledge transfer with client engineering teams. Mandatory Skills: Extensive hands-on experience developing and maintaining production applications.Expert-level knowledge of Java, JVM, and the Spring ecosystem.Recent experience personally writing, debugging, and reviewing production code.Strong experience with automated testing and Test-Driven Development.Experience with CI/CD, release automation, and production deployments.Strong understanding of secure coding, vulnerability remediation, and dependency management.Experience upgrading runtimes, frameworks, and libraries.Experience with Docker and Linux environments.Strong Git and production-debugging skills.Understanding of application observability, resilience, and distributed systems.Strong ownership and ability to lead complex technical work end-to-end.Excellent communication skills and confidence working directly with engineering teams and stakeholders.
