Description
About this job
We are currently looking for a Software Engineer - AI and maintenance/Modernisation to join our client's team in Eindhoven.
Would you like to work on software that sits at the heart of some of the Netherlands’ most advanced high-tech systems?
Our client develops innovative methods and technologies that help leading high-tech organisations understand, maintain and modernise complex software systems.
In this role, you’ll combine software engineering, program analysis and AI to solve real-world challenges in large and often highly complex codebases.
You’ll work closely with experienced engineers and researchers, using real industrial systems as your playground.
Your work can range from analysing and understanding legacy software to developing new tools and AI-assisted solutions that help engineers modernise, refactor and evolve their systems.
It’s a role for someone who enjoys going beyond simply writing code and is curious about how complex software works, how it can be improved, and how AI can help engineers work smarter.
Main responsibilities
As a Software Engineer, you will:
Develop and test methods and tools for program analysis and software comprehension.Analyse large and complex codebases to understand their structure, dependencies and behaviour.Develop models and tools that support software migration, refactoring and modernisation.Explore and apply AI-assisted techniques to software engineering, including generative AI, retrieval and knowledge-based approaches.Build prototypes and turn successful concepts into useful internal tools.Work with existing industrial software written in languages such as C++, C#, Java and Python.Collaborate with software engineers, researchers and industry partners to develop practical solutions.Present your findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.Contribute to technical reports, publications, workshops and other research outputs.
You’ll work across Windows and Linux environments and encounter real-world development practices such as CI/CD, testing, architecture and system engineering.
Requirements
We are looking for a technically strong and curious Software Engineer who enjoys tackling complex problems.
You bring:
An MSc or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Programming Languages or a related technical field.Strong hands-on programming skills and experience working with existing codebases.Professional experience with at least one of C++, C#, Java or Python.Experience or a strong interest in program analysis, compilers, reverse engineering, software modernisation or AI-assisted software engineering. The ability to translate complex technical problems into practical solutions.Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both engineers and researchers.A proactive mindset and the ability to take ownership while working collaboratively.Nice to have:
Experience with LLVM/Clang, Roslyn, ANTLR, tree-sitter or similar tooling.Experience with static analysis, parsing, code-query frameworks or software modelling.Experience developing research prototypes and turning them into maintainable software.Knowledge of modern software engineering practices such as CI/CD, automated testing and software architecture.Experience with Generative AI, RAG, knowledge graphs or AI-assisted coding/software analysis
Why this role?
This is an opportunity to work where software engineering, AI and applied research come together.
Rather than developing technology in isolation, you’ll work on real industrial software and real engineering challenges, with solutions that can directly influence how complex high-tech systems are developed and maintained.
You’ll have the opportunity to deepen your expertise in areas such as AI, program analysis and software modernisation, while working alongside specialists from both research and industry.
If you enjoy understanding how complex software works, solving difficult technical problems and exploring how AI can transform software engineering, this could be a great next step for you.
