Location: Canberra preferred | NSW, VIC, QLD & ACT considered Work Arrangement: Hybrid / Remote considered Contract: 12 months + up to 2 × 12-month extensions Security: Must be eligible to obtain a Baseline Security Clearance Australian Government opportunity SkyDB is seeking an experienced Senior Backend & AI Software Engineer for an exciting long-term opportunity supporting an Australian Government agency. You’ll join a multidisciplinary AI-focused engineering team, working alongside software developers, data scientists, machine learning engineers, business analysts and subject matter experts to build innovative, production-ready software solutions. This is a particularly strong opportunity for a Python/AWS backend engineer who has experience with serverless architecture, DevOps practices and an interest in AI, Machine Learning and MLOps. What You’ll Be DoingDesign, build and maintain production software using Python and AWSDevelop serverless applications and cloud-native backend servicesBuild and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code, preferably using AWS CDKDevelop and manage CI/CD pipelines, including AWS CodePipelineWork closely with Data Scientists and Machine Learning EngineersDevelop Proofs of Concept using emerging technologiesHelp transition innovative concepts into reliable production capabilitiesMaintain and continuously improve existing production systemsContribute to code quality, engineering practices and technical documentationSupport the responsible application of AI and emerging technologiesCollaborate across multidisciplinary Agile delivery teams Core Technical ExperienceWe’re looking for strong commercial experience across: Essential PythonAmazon Web Services (AWS)AWS serverless application developmentInfrastructure-as-Code, ideally AWS CDKDevOps and CI/CDAWS CodePipeline or similar CI/CD toolingAgile software developmentProduction software engineeringHighly Desirable JavaScript and/or TypeScriptVue.jsArtificial Intelligence / Machine LearningMLOpsExperience integrating AI/ML capabilities into production applications What We’re Looking ForYou’ll ideally be a senior software engineer who can work autonomously while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary environment. Government experience is particularly valuable, with the evaluation placing emphasis on: AWS experiencePython software developmentDevOps tools and practicesGovernment multidisciplinary software delivery experience Working ArrangementsThe team is based in Canberra, and office-based work with flexible arrangements is preferred. However, candidates based in ACT, NSW, VIC or QLD may be considered for remote working within the same time zone. Remote candidates should be prepared to: Attend Canberra for approximately 2–3 days during onboardingTravel to Canberra for occasional short visits, typically around twice per year and no more than four times annuallyCover their own travel expenses Security RequirementCandidates must be capable of obtaining an Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance.
