Backend Developer - AWS, TypeScript and Serverless

We are looking for talented Backend Developers to join a digital delivery team working on services that make a real difference to people across the UK. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of developers, designers, product managers, delivery professionals and technical specialists to build, improve and maintain secure, scalable and reliable digital services used by millions of people. You will be responsible for designing and developing backend services and APIs, working with cloud-based technologies and serverless architectures to deliver robust and maintainable solutions. Key responsibilities Design, develop and maintain high-quality backend services using TypeScriptDesign and implement solutions using serverless architecture and cloud-native development principlesDevelop and maintain applications and services using AWS, including AWS LambdaBuild secure, scalable and reliable APIs and backend servicesTranslate user and business requirements into reliable, maintainable technical solutionsWrite clean, well-tested and maintainable code following modern software engineering practicesWork collaboratively with frontend and mobile developers, designers, product managers, QA professionals and other technical specialists within an agile multidisciplinary teamParticipate in technical discussions, code reviews and architectural decision-makingDevelop automated tests and contribute to continuous integration and continuous delivery processesInvestigate and resolve technical issues, defects, performance problems and production incidentsConsider security, accessibility, privacy, resilience, scalability and performance throughout the development lifecycleContribute to technical documentation and knowledge sharing within the teamHelp establish and maintain development standards, patterns and best practicesContribute to an inclusive, collaborative engineering culture and support colleagues through mentoring and knowledge sharing where appropriate Requirements Essential technical skills Candidates should have demonstrable professional experience with: Backend Development Strong commercial experience developing backend services and APIsStrong proficiency in TypeScriptExperience designing and developing solutions using serverless architectureStrong practical experience with AWS cloud servicesStrong experience developing and deploying applications using AWS LambdaUnderstanding of event-driven and cloud-native application architecturesExperience designing secure, scalable and resilient backend servicesExperience working with APIs, including RESTful APIs and integration with external or internal servicesExperience with automated testing, including unit and integration testingExperience using Git and modern software development workflowsUnderstanding of software engineering principles including clean code, modularity, maintainability, version control and appropriate design patternsExperience diagnosing and resolving application defects, performance issues and production problems AWS and Serverless Development Candidates should have a good understanding of: AWS Lambda and serverless application developmentDesigning applications using a serverless architectureAWS services and how they can be combined to build scalable solutionsEvent-driven architectures and asynchronous processingAPI-based integrations and service-to-service communicationManaging application configuration, environments and deployments within AWSCloud security and appropriate access-control principlesMonitoring, logging and troubleshooting cloud-based applicationsDesigning solutions for reliability, scalability and cost efficiency Desirable technical skills Experience with additional AWS services such as API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3, SQS, SNS, EventBridge, CloudWatch and IAMExperience with Infrastructure as Code, particularly AWS CDK, CloudFormation or TerraformExperience with Node.js and the wider TypeScript ecosystemExperience designing and developing RESTful or GraphQL APIsExperience with relational and/or NoSQL databasesExperience with CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment processesExperience with containerisation and DockerExperience with event-driven architecture and messaging systemsFamiliarity with security best practices for cloud-based applicationsExperience with application monitoring, observability, logging and performance optimisationExperience working with large-scale or public-facing digital servicesExperience working within highly regulated or security-conscious environments Benefits By joining us you can expect: Autonomy to develop and grow your skills and experience Be part of exciting project work that is making a difference in society Strong, inspiring and thought-provoking leadership A supportive and collaborative environment.
