Software Engineer — LeafEnterprise
Location: Austin, Texas | Type: Full-time, on-site
Base salary: $80,000–$100,000, based on experience and demonstrated capability
Employment Eligibility

About Leaf Health
Leaf Health is a healthcare consulting and technology organization that helps clients control rising prescription-drug costs while maintaining high-quality patient care.
With more than three decades of industry experience, we support plan sponsors, employers, PBMs, TPAs and brokers, managed-care organizations, and consumers through PBM consulting and audits, medical-benefit drug strategies, rebate operations, pharmacy-product development, sales support, consumer discount products, and healthcare-process consulting.
The Role
Leaf Health is seeking a product-minded Software Engineer to build and improve LeafEnterprise, our company-owned platform for pharmacy-benefit consulting, claims auditing, rebate operations, healthcare data workflows, internal operations, and client-facing products.
This hands-on, full-stack role spans Python command-line applications, back-end services, APIs, SQL, data processing, React interfaces, automated testing, and infrastructure.
The engineer will translate authoritative materials—including contract amendments, vendor specifications, data definitions, and operating procedures—into clear requirements and correct, traceable software.
Engineers receive meaningful end-to-end ownership.
You will become the internal technical authority for assigned products, understand their governing requirements and business purpose, and remain accountable for quality, reliability, delivery, operation, and continued improvement.
This is not a ticket-driven role: you will anticipate risks, investigate defects, strengthen tests, research useful technologies, and improve performance and delivery over the entire product lifecycle.
We follow a local-first engineering model.
Core product behavior should be modular, command-line operable, and fully testable on an engineer-owned machine.
Cloud services, external databases, AI providers, and distributed infrastructure should be introduced only for a demonstrated product, scale, security, reliability, or integration requirement.
We establish correctness and efficiency locally, package the product well, and then deploy it to appropriately scaled infrastructure.
From day one, your work will directly affect client deliverables, revenue capacity, operating efficiency, company growth, and the long-term value of LeafEnterprise.
Strong work is visible and recognized immediately.
Responsibilities
Design, build, test, and maintain modular LeafEnterprise software.Develop reliable Python CLI programs and repeatable operator workflows.Build back-end services, APIs, SQL queries, data pipelines, and integrations.Create responsive, accessible interfaces with TypeScript, React, Next.js, and Tailwind CSS using reusable components and consistent design patterns.Own assigned products through discovery, requirements, architecture, implementation, code review, testing, user acceptance, delivery, operation, incident response, correction, documentation, and continued improvement.Identify the authoritative source for each requirement and translate contractual or operational language into specifications, data models, acceptance criteria, code, tests, and client deliverables.Preserve traceability between source requirements, implementation decisions, calculations, and user-facing results.Keep domain logic deterministic, portable, and testable; isolate required providers behind small, explicit interfaces.Apply OSI-informed layered-systems thinking across application, service, data, runtime, operating-system, networking, and infrastructure boundaries.Diagnose cross-layer defects, identify the component that should own the correction, resolve root causes, and prevent recurrence.Analyze time and space complexity, select appropriate algorithms and data structures, profile important workflows, and optimize measured bottlenecks.Reduce redundant computation, data movement, network calls, coordination, and failure surfaces.Use Git, code review, automated testing, user acceptance testing, and CI/CD to deliver maintainable changes.Write and maintain clear code, API, architecture, operational, and decision documentation so software can be understood, tested, supported, and extended by others.Use coding agents and MCP-based tools with appropriate human review, security, and authorization controls.Work across Linux/x86-64 and Windows using Linux command-line tools and PowerShell.Use SSH and Slurm scripts to submit, monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize remote GPU or batch-compute workloads.Support Azure, AWS, container, GPU, and other scaled deployments when requirements justify them.Explain product behavior, risks, tradeoffs, and outcomes clearly to technical and business stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, recursion, object-oriented design, testing, and software-development principles.Strong runtime and memory analysis skills, including the ability to reason about algorithmic complexity and identify inefficient implementations.Proficiency with Python and experience building command-line applications.Practical experience with Linux/x86-64, Linux shells and tools, Windows PowerShell, and SSH.Experience with Git and collaborative source-control workflows.Ability to write, review, and optimize SQL for relational databases.Experience building server-side applications and APIs.Practical experience with TypeScript, React, Next.js, and Tailwind CSS, including component design, responsive layouts, accessibility, state and data flow, and API integration.Strong layered-systems thinking informed by the OSI model, including the ability to define abstractions, preserve clear interfaces, and reason across the complete software and infrastructure stack.Ability to design modular software, separate domain logic from providers and infrastructure, choose proportionate solutions, and recognize overengineering.Demonstrated ownership of a meaningful software product or project from requirements through user adoption, delivery, or operation.Ability to turn authoritative documents into working software, manage ambiguity explicitly, and avoid silently inventing assumptions.Strong communication across technical and non-technical teams.Sound judgment regarding sensitive data, security, correctness, production changes, and AI-generated work.
Preferred Qualifications
One to three years of professional development experience, including internships, research, or substantial product work; exceptional recent graduates are encouraged to apply.Experience with C or C++, systems programming, concurrency, memory behavior, profiling, or low-level debugging.Deep hands-on ownership of at least one software or systems layer and an understanding of its interactions with adjacent layers.Familiarity with classical machine-learning techniques.Experience with Slurm, GPU or high-performance computing, workload profiling, and compute optimization.Experience with CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, Azure, AWS, containers, distributed systems, or observability.Experience with Codex or similar coding agents and MCP integrations.Experience in healthcare, pharmacy benefits, financial analysis, consulting, regulated software, or another contract-driven, data-intensive environment.
Compensation and Benefits
The anticipated base salary is $80,000–$100,000, based on experience and demonstrated capability, plus a competitive benefits package.
The role may also be eligible for performance-based incentives tied to software quality, reliability, delivery, adoption, operational efficiency, client value, revenue capacity, and documented business impact.
