Software Architect – Quantum Control Systems
Delft, Netherlands | Hybrid 3 days a week onsite 2 days remote

This isn't a typical Software Architect role.
I'm working with one of Europe's leading deep-tech companies building the technology that sits directly between quantum software and physical quantum hardware.
They are looking for a senior Software Architect to own the technical direction of a control stack that needs to scale from hundreds to thousands of qubits.
The interesting bit?
You'll be thinking across the entire stack:
Python APIs → compilers → embedded software → firmware → FPGA → hardware
You'll define how those layers fit together, where responsibilities should sit, how interfaces should evolve and how the architecture scales without needing to be ripped apart every few years.
You'll also remain close enough to the technology to jump into the difficult problems — whether that's instruction scheduling, deterministic timing, compiler optimisation, synchronization or tracing an issue from a high-level Python call all the way down towards the hardware.
What I'm looking for
You'll likely have:
• 10+ years in software/systems engineering
• Deep embedded systems and ideally embedded Linux experience
• Strong understanding of FPGA capabilities and hardware/software interaction
• Strong C/C++ experience alongside Python
• Architecture experience across multiple layers of a complex technical system
• Experience with low-latency, deterministic, real-time or performance-critical environments
• Enough hands-on credibility that engineers still want you involved in the difficult technical conversations
• A track record of influencing technical direction across multiple engineering teams
You do NOT need to come from quantum computing.
Relevant backgrounds could include semiconductor equipment, scientific instrumentation, robotics, telecoms, defence, high-performance embedded systems, control systems or other hardware/software products where timing and performance really matter.
Even better if you've worked with:
• Compilers, ASTs, IRs, DSLs or instruction sets
• DSP or control systems
• Distributed/synchronised processing
• Qiskit, QCoDeS, Cirq, CUDA-Q, NumPy or SciPy
• Quantum control or scientific computing
Why it's interesting
This is a genuine architecture role rather than an architecture-by-PowerPoint role.
You'll have influence over a technically complex product operating at the boundary between software and physics, while remaining close enough to the engineering to prototype, debug and unblock teams when necessary.
