Description
About Purpose Bureau
We're Australia's top ESG data bureau, tracking activities and insights for millions of legal entities globally.
We mix our one-of-a-kind data with real expertise to help companies understand and act on climate, labour, and human rights risk in their supply chains.
Our data platform already powers intelligence for clients around the world, and we're investing heavily in the client portal that puts it at their fingertips.
Position summary
We're looking for a mid-level full stack engineer to help build our client-facing climate and ESG portal: the Python API layer on one side, the React screens on the other.
You'll build features with guidance from our senior engineers and report to our senior full stack engineer, taking on more ownership as you settle in and growing into features you own end to end.
It's meaningful work on a product clients rely on every day, with senior people to learn from.
Key responsibilities
Build features with senior guidance: design and ship features, from FastAPI endpoint to React screen, with direction and review from our senior engineers, on a product clients rely on every dayBuild the backend: develop our Python (FastAPI) API layer and contribute to the migration off our current low-code backend (Xano).
We run on AWS in SydneyShip the frontend: build screens, dashboards, and visualisations in React and TypeScript with the TanStack ecosystem and Apache ECharts.
The job is to turn dense ESG and climate-risk data into something a non-technical client grasps at a glanceWork to the data contract: build against clean, versioned REST APIs (OpenAPI-first, with generated TypeScript types) so the front end and back end meet properlyTreat tenant isolation as sacred: a client must only ever see their own data.
This is a hard security invariant, never an afterthoughtWork with our platform engineer: he owns infrastructure and the backend platform, and you'll build application features on top of itLearn fast: pair with senior engineers, take part in code review (giving as well as receiving), and get to know the codebase quicklyKeep the bar high: write typed, tested code (Vitest, Playwright), because this product carries real client trustWhat you'll bring
2 to 4 years building production software across the stack, ideally with some weighting toward the backendWorking experience with a Python web framework (FastAPI, Django, or Flask), including data modelling and validation, and an appetite to go deeper on FastAPIHands-on React with TypeScript in production; TanStack (Router, Query, or Table) experience is a plusSome exposure to AWS or another cloud providerGenuine care for multi-tenant security and the judgement to treat tenant isolation as non-negotiableAn openness to feedback: you learn from code review and give considered review in returnAlso great to have
Fluency, or real curiosity, with agentic coding tools such as Claude CodeExperience building data-rich interfaces and charts (we use Apache ECharts)A real testing habit across unit and end-to-end testsTime in a startup or small team, where you've worn more than one hatA computer science degree, a bootcamp, or an equivalent self-taught track recordSide projects or open source work we can look atInterest in ESG, climate, or sustainability, and the difference good data can makeWhy join Purpose Bureau
Growth: mentoring from senior engineers, and a clear path to owning features end to end as you settle inWork that matters: what you build is how clients actually see and act on climate, labour, and human rights risk in their supply chainsModern tooling, AI-first: full access to the latest gen-AI coding tools and a codebase built to work with themFair rewards: competitive salary, superannuation, eligibility for our employee equity scheme, real investment in your development, and flexible hybrid working from our Sydney central business district officeA security-conscious team: Purpose Bureau is ISO 27001 certified, and that discipline is part of how we buildSenior people to learn from: a senior full stack engineer, a platform engineer, a data architect, and a Chief Data Officer (CDO) who've solved hard problems and genuinely enjoy sharing what they knowIf you want to build across the full stack on a product clients depend on, with senior people to learn from and real room to grow, we'd like to hear from you.
