Frontend Engineer - New Grad/Early Career

Downtown Calgary | 100% On-Site | Competitive Base + Meaningful Equity About the Role Finofo is looking for an exceptional early-career frontend engineer. You might be graduating this year, recently graduated, or already have some professional experience. We care much less about years on your resume than we do about aptitude, learning velocity, technical judgment, and curiosity. The people we are looking for usually have one thing in common: They were building things before anyone paid them to. You have probably: • Built personal projects outside of school or work • Gone deep on technical problems because you were curious • Shipped an app, website, tool, extension, game, automation, or something else you wanted to exist • Spent time improving an interface even when nobody asked you to • Developed a genuine interest in frontend engineering beyond treating it as a job category Now you want to apply that energy to a meaningful product with real customers, real complexity, and significantly more ownership than most companies give engineers this early in their careers. About Finofo Finofo is building an AI-native platform for how businesses control, understand, and execute spend. Finance teams still manage purchasing, approvals, invoices, payments, reconciliation, and other critical workflows across disconnected systems and manual processes. Finofo is building one intelligent operating layer that helps automate that work from: • Approval • Purchasing • Invoicing • Payment • Reconciliation Finofo is backed by Desjardins and leading US venture investors, with an established product, a growing customer base, and increasing adoption among mid-market finance teams. The Role This is an early-career role but it is not a low-ownership role. You will: • Build real parts of the Finofo product used by real customers • Work closely with experienced engineers, designers, and founders • Take ideas from early concepts through implementation and production • Make product and technical decisions instead of only implementing tickets • Learn how to turn complex workflows into fast, polished interfaces • Take on larger problems as quickly as your capability allows Sometimes you will start with a polished design. Other times you might start with: • A rough prototype • A customer problem • A product requirement • A conversation with another engineer • An incomplete workflow that still needs to be figured out We expect you to develop the judgment to fill in what is missing. That means thinking through questions like: • What should happen after the user takes this action? • What happens while data is loading? • What happens when something fails? • What changes based on role or permission? • What should happen when AI is uncertain? • Can this interaction be simpler? • Does the implementation actually feel as good as the design intended? What You’ll Work On You will build product experiences across areas such as: • Purchase requests and approvals • Purchase orders • Invoice capture and processing • AI-assisted coding and classification • Matching and exception handling • Vendor management • Payments • Expenses • Reconciliation • Spend visibility and controls This is complex B2B software with dense data, permissions, financial workflows, exceptions, AI recommendations, and many different product states. Making that complexity feel simple is a difficult frontend engineering problem. That is what makes the work interesting. Why This Role Is Different At many larger companies, responsibility follows a fairly predetermined timeline. At Finofo, responsibility follows capability. If you demonstrate that you can: • Understand difficult problems • Make good technical decisions • Ship high-quality work • Learn quickly • Take ownership …we will keep giving you bigger problems. You will have experienced people around you to learn from, but you will not need to wait several years before contributing to important parts of the product. For the right person, this creates a much steeper learning curve than a traditional new-grad role. We Care About What You Build Your resume matters. The things you chose to build when nobody required you to build them matter more. We would love to see: • Personal projects • Products you have shipped • Open-source contributions • Hackathon projects • Developer tools • Websites or apps you obsessed over • Technical experiments • Something weird you built because you wanted to understand how it worked The project does not need thousands of users. We care about: • Why you built it • How deeply you went • The decisions you made • The problems you ran into • What you learned • What you would do differently now A small project with real technical depth is more interesting to us than a long list of technologies on a resume. AI-Native Engineering AI is already changing how software gets built. We use Claude and Codex heavily and expect you to become extremely effective with them. That means using AI to: • Move quickly from idea to implementation • Explore unfamiliar parts of a codebase • Generate and compare implementation approaches • Debug problems • Refactor generated code • Prototype ideas rapidly • Learn unfamiliar technologies faster But using AI well does not mean accepting whatever it generates. You still need to: • Understand the code • Recognize bad abstractions • Catch incorrect assumptions • Make good technical decisions • Care about maintainability • Develop your own engineering judgment The distance between an idea and working software is collapsing. We want engineers who are excited about what that makes possible. What We’re Looking For You are likely a strong fit if: • You are a new grad or early in your engineering career • You have built software outside required school or work assignments • You are genuinely interested in frontend engineering • You have strong JavaScript, HTML, and CSS fundamentals • You have experience with React • You care about interaction quality, responsiveness, and visual polish • You are interested in how the product works, not only how the code works • You learn new technologies quickly • You use AI development tools heavily or want to become excellent at using them • You are comfortable reading unfamiliar code and figuring things out • You ask good questions • You have high standards for your own work • You are energized by ambitious people moving quickly We do not use years of post-graduation experience as a proxy for capability. This Role Is Probably Not For You If • Most of what you have built exists because a course or employer required it • You see frontend mainly as translating Figma files into code • You want every implementation decision specified before you begin • You avoid unfamiliar technical problems • You are uncomfortable using AI development tools • You want narrowly defined responsibilities • You prefer an environment where scope expands primarily with tenure There are good engineering roles structured that way. Online Development Challenge You will complete a practical frontend engineering challenge. • AI tools are permitted • Use the workflow and tools you would actually use • We care about the quality of the result and the decisions behind it • We are not testing whether you can memorize syntax without assistance 2. Live Engineering Working Session We will work through a realistic engineering problem together. We want to see: • How you break down an unfamiliar problem • What questions you ask • How you explore a codebase • How you make implementation decisions • How you use AI • How you debug • How quickly you turn an idea into something tangible 3.
