Carex is working with a leading technology partner to hire a Backend Software Engineer to design and implement scalable solutions supporting an advanced engineering simulation platform. This role will focus on high-performance computing (HPC), backend infrastructure, web API architecture, distributed systems, data management, and cloud integration. The ideal candidate brings strong backend engineering experience and enjoys solving complex infrastructure and systems challenges. This position will play an important role in improving simulation workflows, connecting cloud and on-premise computing environments, and building reliable systems capable of supporting growing compute and user demands. What You'll Do Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and web APIs supporting simulation workflows and data access.Improve software systems related to API unification, simulation data management, caching, synchronization, storage, and scripting.Collaborate with engineering and infrastructure teams to develop simulation-specific backend solutions and improve scheduler integrations.Design efficient task pipelines and APIs for orchestrating complex, multi-physics simulation workloads.Build and maintain hybrid-cloud compute and storage solutions connecting on-premise HPC environments with modern cloud platforms.Architect and deploy Kubernetes-based infrastructure for distributed compute and simulation workloads.Develop CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code solutions that enable reliable, reproducible deployments.Optimize and manage high-performance computing environments using high-speed interconnects and CPU/GPU resources.Build monitoring, logging, and observability capabilities to improve platform performance, reliability, and troubleshooting.Design secure service architectures, including authentication, authorization, and related backend security controls.Improve infrastructure scalability and utilization as application traffic, data volumes, and computational demands grow.Develop internal infrastructure tooling that improves engineering productivity and platform operations. What You'll Bring Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.Professional backend software development experience using Java, Python, and/or C++.Strong experience with AWS or comparable cloud platforms, including compute, storage, networking, IAM, and infrastructure automation.Expertise in backend service development and web API architecture.Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and container orchestration.Experience designing, deploying, and operating distributed systems in production environments.Strong knowledge of Linux systems and infrastructure troubleshooting.Experience with infrastructure automation and configuration management tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or similar technologies.Familiarity with monitoring, logging, and observability platforms and practices.Solid understanding of networking fundamentals and backend security best practices.Ability to learn quickly, adapt to evolving technical challenges, and develop innovative solutions in a fast-paced environment.Experience integrating cloud platforms with HPC environments or large compute clusters is a plus.Familiarity with job schedulers such as Slurm, distributed computing frameworks, or large-scale data pipelines is a plus.Experience supporting scientific computing, engineering, or simulation platforms is a plus.Knowledge of GPU infrastructure and resource scheduling is a plus.Experience developing internal infrastructure tooling or developer platforms is a plus.
