Description
At Open, we exist because we believe that insurance does not have to be seen as complicated or costly.
We're an AI-powered platform transforming insurance globally β making it more transparent, cost-effective, and customer friendly.
Since launching in 2016, we've grown into a certified B Corporation, operating across ANZ and the UK.
Engineering is how we earn the trust of our partners and customers, and where we turn Open's strategy into shipped product.
The UK is where our next chapter happens, and this role is one of the first engineering hires into it: you'll be building the integrations our UK partners run on, and helping keep them live.
What you'll do
You'll work on Open Embedded, our flagship product.
It lets brands offer car, home, travel, landlord and purchase-protection insurance inside their own customer journeys, so their customers can buy cover in the same place they buy the core product β configured no-code by our partners, and run end to end by us from quote through to claim.
Core feature development and major platform uplifts are owned by our engineering team in Australia.
The UK team's remit is the UK end β partner requirements and integrations, configuring and extending the platform, and keeping it running in region, hands-on in the same codebase.
Reporting to the Senior Full-Stack Engineer, you'll work with partner-facing colleagues, Product, TechOps, Solution Architecture, and day-to-day with the AU engineering team.
You're joining a small UK team early β more scope than a role like this usually carries, and more support to grow into it.
This is a hands-on role: most of your week is building and debugging β production code across the stack, integration problems, and keeping what runs in the UK healthy.
You'll take work from ambiguous to shipped with a senior engineer close by, and that distance should shrink over time.
You'll be measured on three things:
Partner delivery
Build and ship UK partner integrations β taking pieces of a partner journey from requirement to live, with support on the shape of the whole.Get close to what a partner actually needs β what the platform does, what's configurable, and what needs building.Turn that into working software β configuration/extension where the platform allows it, a clear write-up of the gap where it doesn't.Join technical conversations with a partner's engineers, and own the follow-ups.Give your team an early, honest read on how your work is tracking β no surprise slips.Keep cutting the time from partner signature to live journey.
AI-native ways of working
Work paired with agents across your workflow β design, code, review, test, ops, integration debugging β raising your own bar for how fast you can ship well.Use agents to take the repetitive weight out of partner support β triage, log analysis, first-line diagnosis and reporting.Build with the evaluations, guardrails and human-in-the-loop patterns that let us deploy GenAI safely in a regulated industry.Form your own view on which problems an agent should own end to end versus assist on, backed by evidence from your own work.Bring what you find back to the team β in a small group, one person's better workflow becomes everyone's within a week.
Platform resilience
Help keep the platform healthy in region β availability, incident response, engineering health β alongside the Senior Full-Stack Engineer.Join the on-call rotation once up to speed.
Debug production across a partner boundary you don't control, then write the honest post-incident note.Write code others can change without fear: tested where it counts, observable in production, and documented where the reasoning isn't obvious.Make sound calls within your remit, and know what to bring to the Senior Full-Stack Engineer, AU team or solution architects.Work with TechOps, Solution Architecture and InfoSec on reliability, security, governance and UK/EU data-residency requirements.Feed learnings from partners and incidents back to the team.
Who this role isn't for
This is a broad, hands-on engineering role in a lean, high-trust environment.
It rewards people who are energised by ownership, breadth and agentic leverage, not those looking for a defined lane or a large organisation to sit inside.
Specifically, it's probably not the right fit if:
You want a fully specified ticket queue β requirements arrive ambiguous and commercially loaded; you'll get help shaping them, but you'll be part of doing it, not handed the result. You need greenfield to do your best work β most of what you build extends an existing platform, and the craft is reading it well and changing it safely. You want to stay in one layer of the stack β in a lean team you'll be across the journey, the services, the data, and occasionally the infrastructure. You see AI as autocomplete.
This role is for someone already restructuring how they work around agents, not someone who plans to "start exploring" GenAI.You want to be shielded from partners β you'll be in technical conversations with external engineers, and expected to hold your own.You want a large team to sit inside β for a while, UK engineering is a handful of people, and what you don't do doesn't get done by someone else.
What you'll bring
Required
3+ years building and operating production software β shipped, maintained and run by real users, not just delivered.Full-stack range β strong on one side, competent on the other; you can build the customer journey and the service behind it.Comfortable in someone else's codebase β you can read a large existing system, find the right seam, and extend it safely.Integration experience β worked against an API you don't control, debugged its misbehaviour, and think about contracts, retries and idempotency.Solid in Python and working knowledge of modern AWS β had services in production and know what it takes to keep them up.Modern frontend β TypeScript and a component framework, with real care for the customer experience.Genuinely AI-native β you use AI agents in your own work every day, and can say specifically what changed as a result.Ownership of what you ship β something you built, released and then supported.
You can talk credibly about all three parts.Modern delivery practices β worked with strong CI/CD and understand why small, frequent, reversible changes win.Clear communicator β PR descriptions, design notes and incident write-ups get written unchased, and non-technical colleagues know what to do.Judgment about scope β ship the small useful thing now, flag the bigger problem rather than quietly starting it.Bias for action β spot issues early, fix root causes, and keep pushing for simpler, faster, safer ways of working.Preferred
Exposure to the insurance, fintech, or regulated financial services sector.Experience in a partner-facing, solutions or integration engineering role alongside a core product team.Experience building or using configurable/no-code platforms (embedded insurance, white-label, partner-driven experiences).Shipped something agentic to production, or worked alongside engineers building AI/ML systems, including AI safety practices β evaluations, red-teaming, guardrails, human-in-the-loop.Comfort with cloud-native data warehousing (e.g.
Snowflake) and the analytics/AI data layer.Experience in a distributed team across time zones, with core engineering based elsewhere.Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field β or equivalent practical experience.
Role location
This role is based in London, United Kingdom, hybrid β three days a week in the office.
This rhythm supports collaboration and the fast, high-trust culture we've built, with flexibility on the other two days.
You'll work closely with colleagues in Sydney, including the engineering team that owns the core platform.
In practice that means writing decisions down properly and an early call once or twice a week β not a permanently shifted working day.
You'll need the right to work in the United Kingdom.
Why Open?
It's an exciting time to join Open and be part of a tech scale-up.
We provide our team with:
Highly competitive compensation, including share options β we believe in paying people what they're worth and sharing our success.High autonomy and trust so you can do your best work.Growth opportunities internally β as you grow, your role can too.Flexible working β we are about impact, not time at your desk.Freedom and responsibility, including the ability to work from anywhere.Paid company parental leave, supporting all parents as they balance career and family.Personal development allowance β a flexible annual benefit for learning, wellbeing and growth.
More about us
Insurance is one of the world's least digitally mature industries: confusing, paper-based and heavily intermediated.
We launched in Australia in 2016 to digitise the entire process, opened our London office in 2022 and our Manchester office this year.
We're a certified B Corporation with a team across the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
We do this through three products.
Open Embedded lets businesses offer insurance directly inside their own apps and websites.
Open Agentic uses AI to guide customers through buying a policy, answering questions in plain English.
Open Intel spots the moments someone's likely to need cover β buying a car, moving house β and helps us reach them at the right time.
Diverse perspectives and lived experiences make us better at what we do β if your CV doesn't tick every box, apply anyway, and let us know if you need any adjustments through the process.
Open is for builders β intellectually curious, courageous, and rejecting the idea that "it can't be done".
If that sounds like you, apply and let's build the future of insurance together.
