Description

Location: Helsinki, Finland (Hybrid) · Kuopio or remote within Finland · Relocation support available Build the cloud platform behind Europe's grid-scale batteries We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to help build the cloud infrastructure behind Capalo Zeus VPP™—our virtual power plant that forecasts, optimizes, bids, dispatches, and operates grid-scale battery storage across European electricity markets. This is not an internal business application. Our software continuously interacts with real battery assets and market operators, making production reliability, correctness, and operational excellence central engineering challenges. This is a senior role with end-to-end technical ownership. You'll design backend systems, shape architecture, make production-critical technical decisions, and help evolve the platform as we expand into new markets and new types of energy assets. About Capalo AI Capalo AI develops software that turns grid-scale batteries and hybrid renewable parks into actively traded energy assets through Capalo Zeus VPP™—our fully managed virtual power plant for forecasting, optimization, trading, dispatch, and operational control. Zeus VPP operates continuously across European electricity markets, integrating with wholesale, balancing, and ancillary service markets while coordinating state-of-charge-aware dispatch across battery portfolios. What you'll work on Design and build backend services for asset monitoring, schedule generation, command delivery, and battery dispatchDevelop integrations with asset-side systems and market interfaces using REST APIs, MQTT, and IEC-104Build cloud-native infrastructure on AWS, including event-driven services, storage layers, deployment tooling, and operational foundationsDevelop the backend foundations that support forecasting and optimization pipelines, with a focus on data quality, traceability, replayability, and safe production deploymentImprove observability, failure handling, incident response, and the reliability of business-critical services operating 24/7Contribute to engineering standards through architecture reviews, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), CI/CD, and mentoring other engineers What we're looking for Required Significant experience building and operating production backend systems where reliability, maintainability, and correctness matterStrong hands-on Python and modern backend engineering, including APIs, asynchronous processing, and event-driven architecturesExperience designing production systems, including service boundaries, APIs, failure handling, and operational ownershipProduction experience with AWS or another major cloud platformComfort working across backend engineering, infrastructure, data, and domain logic in technically ambiguous environments Nice to have Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or equivalent)Experience integrating with external APIs, industrial protocols, or machine-to-machine systems (MQTT, IEC-104, SCADA, or PPC experience is a plus)Background in time-series systems, scheduling, control systems, or other operational softwareExperience with energy markets, trading platforms, grid services, or optimization-driven production systems Why Capalo AI Production systems with real-world impact. Your software directly supports how grid-scale batteries participate in European electricity markets.Interesting engineering challenges. Build distributed systems, event-driven cloud services, industrial integrations, and reliable software for continuously operating infrastructure.Meaningful ownership.
