This role offers the opportunity to contribute across the Ubuntu Engineering organization, from foundational systems and server technologies to desktop platforms and archive maintenance.
You will design, build, package, test, integrate, and ship software that supports millions of users worldwide.
Depending on your expertise, you may work with Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, C/C++, Linux distributions, packaging systems, or build automation.
The position combines hands-on software engineering with system-level problem solving and collaboration across a global open source community.

Accountabilities
Design, develop, test, and ship new foundational systems software and applications using technologies such as Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, and C/C++.Package, integrate, test, maintain, and upload open source software to Ubuntu repositories using Debian and Snap packaging mechanisms.Engineer integrations across the software stack, from boot firmware and core system components to cloud application deployments.Build and maintain automation and engineering infrastructure responsible for building, testing, and shipping Ubuntu.Contribute to the maintenance, evolution, and overall quality of a Linux distribution and its repositories.Investigate and resolve system-level issues, delivering reliable, robust, and maintainable solutions.Author and improve technical documentation and community documentation to support users and fellow engineers.Contribute to upstream and related open source projects while actively participating in the broader open source community.Collaborate effectively within a globally distributed engineering organization and share knowledge by mentoring colleagues.Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes and increase the efficiency and quality of software delivery.
Requirements
2–4 years of professional software engineering experience after completing university, with a demonstrated record of delivering high-quality technical work.Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a related discipline, or a compelling alternative professional or educational background.Strong academic performance and a demonstrated drive to exceed expectations.Significant hands-on experience with at least one of Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, or C/C++.Genuine passion for open source software and an interest in contributing to large-scale open source projects.Professional proficiency in written and spoken English, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Ability to work effectively in a globally distributed environment and collaborate across teams and cultures.Willingness and ability to travel internationally approximately twice per year for company events lasting up to two weeks.Experience with Linux distributions and distribution engineering is highly desirable.Knowledge of software packaging and distribution mechanisms is an advantage.Understanding of build systems, toolchains, and cross-compilation is beneficial.Experience in performance engineering or security engineering is a plus.
