This is an opportunity for an experienced software engineer to contribute to products used by millions of people worldwide. You’ll work across a diverse technology ecosystem spanning publishing, e-commerce, social platforms, and other open-web products. The role emphasizes high-quality engineering, thoughtful abstractions, scalability, performance, and reliable production systems. You’ll work in a fully distributed environment where collaboration happens across borders, time zones, and technical disciplines. Engineers are encouraged to ship frequently, participate in peer code review, and contribute to open-source development. Accountabilities Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain high-quality software across a broad product ecosystem, contributing to products that serve a large and diverse global user base.Solve complex technical problems through effective debugging, investigation, experimentation, and thoughtful engineering decisions.Work across multiple layers of the technology stack, understanding how architectural choices and abstractions affect performance, maintainability, reliability, and user experience.Contribute to products and platforms spanning areas such as content publishing, e-commerce, social networking, collaboration, and other web-based experiences.Develop and maintain scalable backend and frontend systems capable of supporting high traffic, large datasets, and complex interactions.Participate in frequent production deployments supported by continuous integration, peer code review, testing, and distributed engineering practices.Collaborate openly with engineers and colleagues across teams, participating in technical discussions and contributing ideas through global communication channels.Contribute to open-source projects and engineering practices where appropriate, embracing transparency and community-driven development.Evaluate technical trade-offs carefully, considering both the value and cost of abstractions, tools, frameworks, and architectural decisions.Use modern development approaches, including AI-assisted tools and workflows where they provide meaningful value, while applying sound engineering judgment about when such tools should or should not be used.Continuously improve technical skills, development practices, and product knowledge while sharing expertise with colleagues. Requirements Demonstrated professional experience as a software engineer, with a track record of delivering production-quality software.Experience working with multiple programming languages, frameworks, and programming paradigms; strong expertise in any particular language is valuable, while willingness to become highly proficient in PHP and JavaScript is expected.Experience working with software systems at scale, whether through backend engineering, performance optimization, infrastructure complexity, or interaction with a large and diverse user base.Strong debugging and problem-solving abilities, with genuine curiosity about understanding the underlying causes of technical issues.Ability to reason across layers of abstraction and understand the technical and operational implications of architectural decisions.Strong attention to engineering quality, maintainability, reliability, performance, and detail.Ability to evaluate technical trade-offs pragmatically, recognizing that abstractions introduce both benefits and costs.Comfortable working independently in a fully distributed, remote environment while maintaining strong communication and collaboration with teammates.Willingness and ability to travel approximately 3–4 weeks per year for in-person team gatherings.Strong written and verbal communication skills and an openness to participating in discussions across teams and functions.A growth-oriented mindset and enthusiasm for learning new technologies, approaches, and engineering practices.
