ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a software engineer with strong command of the fundamentals: separation of concerns, abstraction boundaries that hold up under change, deliberate error handling, and the judgment to manage complexity rather than accumulate it.
A deep understanding of the layer beneath the application is required, including networking, security and least privilege, API and SDK design, data modeling, streams and queues.
Proficiency with AI matters just as much.
We are not looking for candidates who have tried these tools, but for engineers who have built serious workflows around them, who know which problems a model solves reliably and which it answers confidently and wrongly, and who remain the authority over their own architecture rather than deferring to it.
We are not looking for one-dimensional engineers.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Own features end to end, from schema design and API contracts through to the interface the user touchesWork across the stack and across the product, including regular work in unfamiliar codeApply AI tooling deliberately and be prepared to justify where it was and was not usedDiagnose problems that have no documented answer, including in code you did not writeShip, monitor the result, and correct what you find
REQUIREMENTS
Professional software engineering experience, with shipped work you can discuss in technical depth.
At least two projects you know thoroughly.The instinct to investigate rather than accept.
At this level we do not expect mastery of every topic above.
We expect that when you encounter something you do not understand, you go one layer down and establish what is actually happening.Evidence of independent judgment when working with AI.
You should be able to take us through work where you overrode a generated solution, and explain how you knew to do so.Adaptability across languages, frameworks, and inherited codebases, with a demonstrated record of becoming productive in unfamiliar territory.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Neither of the following is required, and neither will be held against you.
Each will weigh substantially in your favor.
DevOps capability: CI/CD pipelines, containerization, cloud infrastructure, and monitoring.
The ability to deploy a system properly, not merely to deploy it.Design sense: judgment about interface, spacing, hierarchy, and what distinguishes a product that feels considered from one that feels assembled.
Engineers who can identify that something looks wrong, and correct it, are less common than they should be.
